Every dental service for Jarvis patientsA considered cosmetic change
Veneers are thin shells, usually porcelain or composite, bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. They can mask stains that whitening cannot reach, close gaps, lengthen worn teeth and improve shape. Porcelain veneers generally require removing a thin layer of enamel, which makes the decision a lasting one.
Our Port Dover office offers veneer consultations for people coming from Jarvis and nearby Haldimand County. The appointment focuses on whether veneers truly suit your teeth, or whether a more conservative option might reach the same goal.

Who they suit
Deep discolouration, chipped or worn edges, small gaps and teeth that are slightly misshapen or uneven in length are common reasons people consider veneers. They can also give a more uniform appearance to several front teeth. Healthy teeth and gums are a requirement before veneers are placed.
Significant crowding or bite problems may be better addressed with aligners first. Heavy grinding can damage veneers, so it should be managed. If your goal is mainly brighter teeth, whitening might be enough. The dentist will explain if veneers are not the most suitable option for you.
Choosing materials
Porcelain veneers are made in a lab, resist staining well and can look very natural. They usually require some enamel reduction and two or more visits. Because enamel removal is irreversible, the tooth will generally always need some type of covering afterward. Ask how much reduction your case requires.
Composite veneers are built directly on the teeth, often in a single visit, with little or no enamel removed. They cost less but are more prone to staining and chipping, and may need more frequent maintenance. The dentist can discuss which material matches your goals and budget.
The process
Planning often includes photos, impressions or scans and a discussion of shape, length and shade. Some practices create a mock-up so you can see a preview of the proposed changes. Take time to review it and share feedback, since small adjustments are easier at this stage than after bonding.
For porcelain veneers, teeth are numbed and lightly prepared, impressions are taken and temporaries may be placed. At the bonding visit, each veneer is checked for fit and colour before being permanently attached. Your bite is checked and adjusted. Composite veneers are shaped and polished in the chair.
Caring for veneers
Brush and floss as usual, paying attention to the gumline. Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens or fingernails and using your front teeth to open packages. If you grind or clench, wearing a night guard can protect veneers. Limit staining foods and drinks if you have composite veneers.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the veneers, the gum margins and the teeth underneath. Contact the office if a veneer chips, feels loose or the gum around it becomes sore. Veneers eventually wear and may need replacement after a number of years.
Planning your appointment

Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so the tooth will need a covering long term. Veneers themselves eventually need replacing. Composite veneers are often more reversible.
No. Whitening does not change the colour of porcelain or composite. If you want whiter natural teeth around the veneers, whitening is usually done before the shade is chosen.
Well-planned veneers can look very natural. Shape, shade and translucency are matched to your face and surrounding teeth. Previewing the design helps ensure the result suits you.
Porcelain veneers often last many years with good care, while composite may need repair or replacement sooner. Grinding, biting habits and hygiene all affect longevity.
The teeth are usually numbed for preparation. Some sensitivity afterward can occur for a short period. Most people find the process comfortable overall.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Jarvis residents can find out at our Port Dover office whether it suits their smile.
Small chips, pointed edges or uneven lengths can sometimes be refined by contouring enamel. Jarvis patients can ask at our Port Dover office whether reshaping suits them.
