Veneers are thin coverings, usually made of porcelain or composite resin, that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. They can change the colour, shape or length of teeth and make them appear straighter, while covering stains, chips or small gaps. Porcelain veneers typically require removing a thin layer of enamel first, which makes the change permanent for those teeth.
If you are in Hillcrest and considering veneers, a consultation at our Port Dover office is the place to start. The dentist will assess your teeth, discuss your goals and explain whether veneers or a more conservative option, such as whitening or bonding, would serve you better in the long run.

Considering veneers
Veneers are often used for teeth that remain discoloured despite whitening, or that are chipped, worn, slightly misaligned or unevenly shaped. They can create a more uniform appearance across several teeth at once. The dentist will examine your smile and talk through which teeth would need veneers to achieve a balanced result, since treating only one or two can be tricky to match.
People with active gum disease, untreated decay, heavy grinding or very little enamel may not be good candidates without other treatment first. Significant crowding may be better addressed with orthodontics before or instead of veneers. The dentist will explain any concerns openly and suggest alternatives such as bonding, whitening or aligners when they may suit you better.
Materials
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and are known for resisting stains and reflecting light much like natural enamel. They usually require some enamel removal and at least two visits. They can last many years but may chip or come loose, and replacement eventually becomes necessary. Ask the dentist what lifespan is realistic given your bite and habits.
Composite veneers are built directly onto the teeth and often require less enamel removal. They can usually be completed in a single visit and tend to cost less. However, they are more prone to staining and chipping and may need more frequent polishing or repair. The dentist will compare these factors with you so the choice reflects your priorities.
The process
Planning may include photographs, impressions and a mock-up that lets you preview the proposed shape and length before anything permanent is done. For porcelain veneers, the teeth are numbed and a thin layer of enamel is removed. Impressions are taken and temporary veneers may be placed while the laboratory crafts the final ones to the agreed design.
When the veneers are ready, the dentist checks their fit and colour against your teeth before bonding them in place. Your bite is checked and fine-tuned. The teeth may feel slightly different to your tongue at first. A follow-up visit allows the dentist to check the gums around the veneers and make any small refinements that are needed.
Living with veneers
Brush and floss as usual, using a non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid biting nails, ice, pens or other hard objects with veneered teeth. If you grind at night, wear a night guard as recommended. Although porcelain resists stains, the edges and your natural teeth can still discolour, so it helps to moderate coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco.
Regular checkups let the dentist inspect veneers for chips, gaps at the edges and gum health. If a veneer chips or comes loose, keep it and contact the office promptly. Over time, veneers may need replacing, and because enamel was removed during preparation, the teeth will always need some form of covering from that point onward.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office and mention that you are interested in veneers. The dentist will examine your teeth, discuss whether veneers suit your goals and oral health and outline the steps and timeline involved.
If you are curious about less permanent options as well, ask the dentist to compare them during the same visit so you can weigh them together.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Porcelain veneers usually require removing some enamel, so those teeth will need a covering from then on. The veneers themselves may need replacing after a number of years. Composite veneers may involve less enamel removal and can sometimes be adjusted more easily.
Well-planned veneers can look very natural. Shape, colour and translucency are chosen to suit your face and surrounding teeth. Discuss your preferences openly, and ask to see a mock-up if one is available, so there are no surprises at the end.
Veneers can make mildly crooked teeth appear straighter, but they do not actually move teeth. Significant misalignment is often better treated with orthodontics. The dentist will explain the most suitable approach for your teeth and bite.
Porcelain resists staining well, while composite can discolour over time. Natural teeth around veneers can still stain, so moderating coffee, tea and red wine helps maintain an even appearance. Regular cleanings also help keep everything looking consistent.
Keep any pieces and contact the office. Depending on the damage, the veneer may be repaired or replaced. In the meantime, avoid biting with that tooth. Steering clear of hard objects in general reduces the risk of breakage in the future.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to mend chips, close small gaps or cover marks. Hillcrest patients can ask in Port Dover whether it suits their teeth.
Minor reshaping can smooth uneven edges or small chips. Hillcrest patients can ask at our Port Dover office whether enamel contouring suits their teeth.
