A new front surface

Veneers are a lasting commitment, so the decision deserves time.

A veneer is a thin shell, usually porcelain or composite resin, bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can mask stubborn discolouration, close gaps, lengthen worn teeth or improve shape and proportion. Because some enamel is typically removed to make room for them, the change is generally considered permanent and should be thought through carefully.

If you are in Boston and interested in veneers, start with a cosmetic consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at your teeth, gums and bite, talk about what you would like to change and explain whether veneers or a more conservative option would serve you best.

Are veneers right

Veneers solve some problems well and others less so.

What veneers can improve

Veneers can be a good fit for teeth with deep stains that whitening cannot shift, chipped or worn edges, small gaps or teeth that are slightly uneven in size or shape. They can create a uniform look across several front teeth. The dentist will check that the teeth are healthy and stable enough to support veneers before going further.

Reasons to consider other options

Active decay, gum disease, heavy grinding or significant crowding may make veneers less suitable or require other treatment first. If only minor changes are wanted, whitening, bonding or reshaping might achieve a pleasing result with less tooth removal. A good consultation explores these alternatives openly instead of jumping straight to veneers as the only answer.

Planning

Material and design choices shape the final look.

Porcelain or composite

Porcelain veneers are made outside the mouth and are known for stain resistance and a natural sheen. Composite veneers are built directly on the tooth and may require less preparation, but they can stain or chip more easily. The dentist will explain the trade-offs in durability, appearance and long-term maintenance for your situation and bite.

Previewing the result

Photos, models or a digital mock-up may be used to preview the planned shape and length. Some practices place a temporary trial so you can see and feel the design. Use this stage to share your opinions honestly. Changes are much easier to make before the final veneers are produced than after they are bonded in place.

Treatment

Porcelain veneers typically involve at least two visits.

  1. Preparing the teeth

For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front of the tooth so the veneer sits naturally. The area is numbed for comfort. Impressions or a scan are taken and temporary coverings may be placed. The amount of preparation varies and should be explained clearly before the procedure begins, so you know what is permanent.

  2. Bonding the veneers

At the fitting appointment, each veneer is checked for colour, shape and fit before being bonded. The dentist refines edges and checks your bite. You will have a chance to review the result in a mirror. Mention anything that feels rough or uneven, since small adjustments can usually be made on the spot before you head home.

Living with veneers

Veneers last best with sensible habits and regular checks.

  • Protecting your veneers

Brush and floss normally, but avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens or fingernails, which can chip veneers. If you grind your teeth, a night guard is often recommended. Keep up regular checkups so the dentist can examine the edges of the veneers and the health of the gums around them, where problems often begin.

  • Planning for eventual replacement

Veneers do not last forever. Over time they may chip, wear or the gums may change, exposing edges. Replacement eventually becomes necessary for many people. Ask the dentist how long veneers typically last in situations like yours and what is involved in repairing or replacing them, so you have realistic long-term expectations before you commit.

Veneer questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Are veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, which does not grow back, so the tooth will always need a covering afterward. Composite veneers may involve less preparation. The dentist will explain how reversible each option is for your teeth.

Do veneers look natural?

Well-planned veneers can look very natural. Shade, shape and proportion are chosen to suit your face and remaining teeth. Previewing the design and giving honest feedback helps you reach a result you are comfortable with.

Can veneers be whitened?

No. Veneers do not respond to whitening products. If you want your natural teeth lighter, whitening is usually done before veneers are made so the colours can be matched to the brighter shade you have reached.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last many years with good care, while composite may need more frequent repair. Grinding, biting hard objects and gum changes all affect longevity, so regular checkups and a night guard if you grind are important.

Is a veneer the same as a crown?

No. A veneer covers only the front of a tooth, while a crown covers the whole tooth. Crowns are generally used when more structural support is needed, such as for heavily filled or cracked teeth.
