Injuries need fast, careful steps

What you do in the first hour after an injury can matter.

Dental trauma includes chipped, cracked, loosened, pushed-in, pushed-out and knocked-out teeth, along with cuts to the lips, gums and tongue. Injuries often happen during sports, falls, cycling or car accidents. The type of injury, whether it affects a baby or adult tooth and how quickly care is sought all influence the outcome.

If someone in Hagersville injures their teeth, check for serious injuries first, then call our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can advise on immediate steps and how urgently to make the trip.

Check safety first

Look beyond the teeth before anything else.

  • Signs of a more serious injury

A blow strong enough to injure teeth may also affect the head, neck or jaw. Watch for loss of consciousness, headache, confusion, vomiting, double vision, jaw that will not close properly or trouble breathing. Any of these needs emergency medical care. Dental treatment can follow once serious injuries are ruled out.

  • Controlling bleeding

Mouth wounds often bleed heavily at first. Apply firm pressure with clean gauze or cloth for several minutes. Cold compresses on the outside of the face can reduce swelling. If bleeding does not slow despite pressure, or a deep cut may need stitches, seek medical care promptly. Check whether any tooth pieces are missing.

Types of injury

Each kind of injury calls for a different response.

Chipped, cracked or loosened teeth

For chips and fractures, save any fragments in milk or water and call the office. A tooth that feels loose but is still in place should be kept still; avoid wiggling it and eat soft foods. Pink spots or bleeding from the centre of a break can mean the nerve is exposed and should be seen soon.

Displaced or knocked-out teeth

Teeth pushed out of position, into the gum or knocked out need prompt attention. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to replant it or keep it in milk. Do not replant a baby tooth. Call right away so the team can advise on the next steps.

The assessment

The dentist evaluates teeth, roots and surrounding tissues.

Examining the injury

The dentist checks the injured teeth, their position, mobility and response to tests, and looks at the gums, lips and bite. X-rays help reveal root fractures or damage to supporting bone. Photos may be taken to record the injury. Describe exactly how the injury happened and when, as timing matters for treatment.

Stabilizing and treating

Treatment may include repositioning a displaced tooth, splinting loose teeth to their neighbours, repairing fractures or protecting an exposed nerve. Some injuries need root canal treatment. The dentist will explain what is being done now and what follow-up is needed to monitor healing over the coming months, including for nearby teeth.

Follow-up care

Injured teeth often need monitoring for months.

  1. The healing period

Eat soft foods while the area heals, keep the mouth clean with gentle brushing and follow any rinsing instructions. If a splint was placed, keep follow-up visits for its removal. Avoid contact sports until the dentist confirms it is safe, and consider a properly fitted mouthguard when returning to play.

  2. Watching for later changes

Some problems show up weeks or months later. A tooth may darken, become tender, develop a gum bump or loosen. Regular follow-up exams and X-rays help catch these changes early. Contact the office if you notice anything new, rather than waiting until the next scheduled review from Hagersville.

Dental injury questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

What should I do with a knocked-out adult tooth?

Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse briefly if dirty and try to put it back in the socket, or store it in milk. Call a dental office immediately, as quick action improves the chance of saving the tooth.

Should a knocked-out baby tooth be put back?

No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Control bleeding with gauze and call the office for advice. The dentist will check for other injuries and the developing teeth.

My tooth feels fine after the injury. Do I need an exam?

Yes, it is still wise to have it checked. Damage to the nerve or root may not cause immediate symptoms. An exam and X-rays can establish a baseline and help the dentist spot changes during follow-up.

Why did my injured tooth turn dark?

Darkening can happen when the nerve is affected by the injury. Sometimes the colour improves, but it may signal the nerve is dying. Contact the office so the dentist can assess whether treatment is needed.

Can dental injuries be prevented?

Not entirely, but a properly fitted mouthguard reduces risk in sports. Seatbelts, bike helmets and childproofing at home also help. Avoid using teeth as tools, and ask the dentist about protection if you play contact sports.
