A dental implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed into the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once it bonds with the bone, it can support a crown, bridge or denture. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support and can help preserve bone in the area. They do, however, involve surgery, healing time and careful planning from the start.
If you are in Windham Centre and considering implants, our Port Dover office can assess your bone, gums and general health and explain whether implants are a suitable option for you. Some parts of treatment may be coordinated with a specialist, and the dentist will explain clearly who does what and why.

Are implants right
Adequate bone volume, healthy gums and good general health support implant success. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and certain medications can increase the risk of problems. The dentist will review your medical history, examine the area and use X-rays or 3D imaging to assess the bone. If bone is limited, grafting may be discussed before or during implant placement.
Bridges and partial dentures are alternatives with different trade-offs in cost, time and their effect on other teeth. Implant treatment often takes several months from start to finish. The dentist will compare the options, outline each step and its cost, and answer questions so you can decide which approach best fits your health, budget and expectations.
Planning
Imaging helps determine the best position and size for the implant and identifies nearby structures such as nerves and sinuses. The plan will set out the number of implants, the type of final restoration and the expected timeline. Request a written estimate that covers each stage, including any grafting, the implant itself, the abutment and the final crown or denture.
Before surgery, the dentist may recommend treating gum disease or decay elsewhere in the mouth. Follow instructions about eating and medications, and arrange a ride home if sedation is used. Stopping smoking can improve healing considerably. Ask what to expect on the day, how long the procedure will take and what recovery typically looks like in situations similar to yours.
Treatment stages
Under local anaesthetic, the implant is placed into the jawbone. The gum may be closed over it or a small healing cap left visible. Over the following months, the bone gradually bonds with the implant surface. A temporary tooth may be provided in some cases so you are not left with a visible gap. Mild swelling and discomfort for a few days are common.
Once healing is complete, an abutment is attached to the implant and impressions or scans are taken for the final restoration. The crown, bridge or denture is then fitted and adjusted for bite and appearance. The dentist will check that it sits comfortably and show you how to clean around it, which is essential for keeping the implant healthy.
Long-term care
Although implants cannot decay, the gum and bone around them can become inflamed, a condition called peri-implantitis. Brush twice daily, clean around the implant with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, and keep up with professional cleanings. Your hygienist can recommend tools and techniques that suit your particular restoration and the spaces around it.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the implant, the restoration and the health of the surrounding gum, taking X-rays when needed. Report any bleeding, swelling, looseness or changes in your bite promptly. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect the restoration. With good care, many implants function well for a long time.
Planning your appointment
Call our office to book an implant consultation. Windham Centre patients can mention which teeth are missing and how long they have been gone, so the dentist can plan the right assessment and imaging.
Bring medical history details, a current medication list and any previous dental X-rays or treatment plans you have received from other offices.

Treatment often spans several months to allow healing between stages. Grafting or extractions may extend the timeline further. After assessing your situation, the dentist will outline an expected schedule so you can plan around it.
The area is numbed during placement, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some swelling and discomfort for a few days afterward are common and are usually manageable with the pain relief the dentist recommends.
Not everyone is a suitable candidate. Bone volume, gum health, smoking and certain medical conditions can affect success. The dentist will assess you carefully and explain whether implants or another replacement option is more advisable.
Implants can last many years with good care, though the crown or denture attached to them may need replacing over time. Regular checkups and thorough daily cleaning are important for long-term success and everyday comfort.
Bone grafting may be possible to build up the area before or during implant placement. The dentist will explain whether grafting is needed, how it affects the timeline and whether it would involve referral to a specialist.
An implant crown replaces a single missing tooth on a post in the jaw. Windham Centre patients can learn about planning, fitting and care in Port Dover.
