A root replacement

Implants take time to plan and heal, and they need ongoing care.

A dental implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone to act as a replacement root. Once it bonds with the bone, it can support a crown, a bridge or a denture. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, and many people find they feel and function much like natural teeth.

Patients from Vanessa can begin with an assessment at our Port Dover office to learn whether an implant is a realistic option. Implant treatment typically unfolds over several months and multiple appointments, so understanding the full timeline early helps you plan around work and family life.

Suitability

Not everyone is a good candidate, and that is worth knowing early.

Health and bone requirements

Implants need enough healthy bone to anchor them and healthy gums around them. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, certain medications and some medical conditions can affect healing and long-term success. The dentist reviews your health history, examines the area and usually takes X-rays or a 3D scan to assess bone volume and nearby structures such as nerves and sinuses.

Comparing with other options

A bridge or partial denture may be a reasonable alternative, with different costs, timelines and maintenance. Ask the dentist to compare them honestly for your situation. Implants avoid reshaping neighbouring teeth but involve surgery and healing time. Knowing the trade-offs helps you choose what suits your health, budget and expectations, without feeling pushed toward the most involved option.

Planning

Careful planning sets up a predictable result.

  • Scans and treatment sequence

Detailed imaging helps plan the implant’s position, angle and size. The dentist will explain the sequence of appointments, from placement to the final crown, and roughly how long healing may take between steps. Ask for a written plan with estimated costs, and check any insurance coverage directly with your provider before committing to the first step.

  • Bone grafting and referrals

If bone is too thin, grafting may be needed before or during implant placement, which adds time. Some cases are best handled by an oral surgeon or periodontist, and the dentist will explain if a referral is recommended. Any active decay or gum disease elsewhere in the mouth should be treated first, so the implant starts in a healthy environment.

Placement and healing

The implant is placed, then left to bond with the bone.

  1. Placing the implant

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. The gum is opened, a precise space is prepared in the bone and the post is inserted. Some swelling and tenderness for a few days is normal. You will receive instructions on pain control, soft foods and keeping the area clean while it heals over the first weeks.

  2. Integration and the final tooth

Over the following months, bone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration. Once it is stable, a connector called an abutment is attached and impressions are taken for the crown. The final crown is then fitted and the bite checked. A temporary tooth may be possible during healing in some cases, so the gap is not left open.

Long-term care

An implant cannot decay, but the gums around it can become inflamed.

Cleaning around implants

Brush twice daily and clean around the implant carefully with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. Plaque buildup can cause inflammation of the tissues around the implant, called peri-implantitis, which can lead to bone loss if ignored. The hygienist can show you techniques that work well for implant crowns and suggest tools that reach the gumline comfortably.

Regular reviews

Regular checkups and cleanings let the dentist monitor the implant, the gum and the bone level with occasional X-rays. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may protect the crown. Call if the implant tooth feels loose, the gum bleeds or swells, or your bite feels different. Problems around implants are easier to manage when they are caught early.

Dental implant questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does implant treatment take?

It varies, but many cases take several months from placement to the final crown, mainly to allow the implant to bond with the bone. Bone grafting or other preparatory steps can extend the timeline. The dentist will outline an estimate for your case.

Is implant surgery painful?

The area is numbed during the procedure, and sedation may be available. Afterward, mild to moderate soreness and swelling for a few days are common and usually manageable with the pain relief the dentist recommends.

Can smokers get dental implants?

Smoking increases the risk of implant failure and gum problems around the implant. Some smokers still receive implants, but the dentist will discuss the risks and strongly encourage reducing or quitting, especially around surgery and healing.

How long do implants last?

Many implants last for many years with good care, though the crown on top may need replacement at some point. Daily cleaning, regular checkups and avoiding tobacco all improve the long-term outlook for the implant and the surrounding bone.

Are implants covered by insurance?

Coverage varies widely between plans. Some cover part of the cost, others none. Ask the office for a written treatment estimate and check directly with your insurance provider before beginning treatment, so there are no surprises partway through the process.
