A dental implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once the bone has bonded to it, the implant can support a crown, bridge or denture. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, and many people find they feel stable for chewing. The process does involve surgery and several months of healing.
Pine Grove patients can start with a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health, bone and bite to discuss whether implants are suitable, and what alternatives exist if they are not.

Candidacy
Healthy gums, enough bone to hold the implant and good general health all support success. Non-smokers tend to heal more predictably. A willingness to clean carefully and attend regular reviews is also important, since implants need ongoing care. The dentist will use examination findings and imaging to assess the site in detail.
Uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease, certain medications, heavy smoking and some medical treatments can affect healing. Bone loss after a long-missing tooth may require grafting. None of these always rules out implants, but they need discussion. The dentist may coordinate with your physician or refer to a specialist when appropriate.
Planning
Planning often involves X-rays, sometimes 3D imaging, impressions and photographs. These help determine implant size and position relative to nerves, sinuses and neighbouring teeth. The dentist will explain whether placement can happen at the office or whether part of the treatment would be referred, and why that is recommended.
Implant treatment typically spans several months from placement to final restoration. Ask for an outline of each stage, the number of appointments and what happens if healing takes longer. A written estimate helps with financial planning. Check with your insurer about coverage, as it varies widely between plans.
Treatment stages
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, and sometimes with sedation. A small opening is made in the gum, the bone is prepared and the post is inserted. Stitches may be placed. Some cases allow a temporary tooth right away, while others need the site covered during healing. Mild swelling and soreness are common afterward.
Over the following months, the bone integrates with the implant. Once healing is confirmed, an abutment is attached and impressions are taken for the final crown, bridge or denture. The restoration is then fitted and the bite is checked. Follow-up visits ensure everything is functioning comfortably.
Long-term care
Implants cannot decay, but the surrounding gum and bone can become inflamed, a condition called peri-implantitis. Brush twice daily and clean around the implant with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. Ask the hygienist to demonstrate techniques suited to your restoration so you can reach every surface.
Regular checkups and cleanings allow the team to monitor gum health and bone levels around the implant. Report bleeding, swelling, looseness or a change in bite promptly. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may protect both the implant restoration and your natural teeth from excessive force.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office to discuss replacing one or more missing teeth. The dentist will review your health and explain the steps, timeline and alternatives.
Bring a full medication list, any recent dental X-rays and details of past gum treatment. Note how long the tooth has been missing.

From placement to final crown, it often takes several months to allow bone healing. Bone grafting or other preparation can add time. The dentist will give an estimated timeline after reviewing your imaging and health history.
The area is numbed during the procedure, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness and swelling afterward are common for a few days and usually manageable with recommended pain relief and aftercare.
With good care, implants can last many years. The crown or denture on top may need replacement over time due to wear. Regular checkups and daily cleaning are key to keeping the surrounding gum and bone healthy.
Sometimes. Bone grafting can rebuild the site before or during implant placement. The dentist will assess your bone with imaging and discuss whether grafting, a different approach or another replacement option is more suitable.
Each has advantages. Implants do not involve adjacent teeth but require surgery and healing time. Bridges are quicker but rely on neighbouring teeth. The dentist can help you compare them based on your mouth and priorities.
An implant crown is the visible tooth fixed to a healed implant. Pine Grove patients can learn about shade matching, fitting visits and daily implant care.
Implant-supported dentures attach to posts in the jaw for added stability. Pine Grove patients can compare designs, healing timelines and cleaning routines.
