A root-level replacement

Implants take time, planning and healthy foundations.

A dental implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once it has bonded with the bone, it can support a crown, bridge or denture. Implants can feel stable and natural, but they involve surgery, a healing period and an ongoing commitment to cleaning and checkups.

Whether you lost a tooth recently or years ago, an implant consultation at our Port Dover office can help a Jarvis patient understand if this route fits. The dentist reviews your bone, gums and health before any plan is proposed.

Candidacy

Not everyone is ready for an implant right away.

  • Health and bone considerations

Enough healthy bone is needed to hold the implant. X-rays or a three-dimensional scan may be used to assess bone height, width and the position of nerves and sinuses. Gum disease should be treated first. Some medical conditions and medications affect healing, so a complete health history is essential.

  • Lifestyle factors

Smoking can significantly increase the risk of implant complications, and uncontrolled diabetes may affect healing. Grinding can place extra stress on implants. The dentist will discuss these factors openly, along with steps that might improve your chances of success, such as quitting smoking or managing a condition.

The plan

The restoration you need shapes the implant plan.

Single tooth or multiple teeth

One implant can support a single crown. Several implants can anchor a bridge or stabilize a denture. The number and position of implants depend on how many teeth are missing, bone availability and your goals. The dentist will explain each option, the timeline and how it compares with bridges or dentures.

When bone grafting is discussed

If bone has shrunk after tooth loss, a graft may be suggested to build up the area before or during implant placement. This can add time to treatment. Some cases may be referred to a specialist. Ask what is recommended for you and why, so you understand the full process.

Treatment stages

Implant treatment unfolds over several months.

  1. Placing the implant

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation. The gum is opened, the post is inserted into the bone and the area is closed. Some swelling and discomfort are normal afterward. You will receive aftercare instructions and may need a soft diet for a period.

  2. Healing and the final restoration

The bone gradually bonds to the implant over a healing period that varies between patients. A temporary tooth may be provided in visible areas. Once healing is confirmed, a connector is attached, impressions are taken and the final crown or prosthesis is made and fitted.

Long-term care

Implants need daily care just like natural teeth.

Cleaning around implants

Implants cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed and infected, a condition that can threaten the implant. Brush carefully around the implant and clean between teeth with floss, interdental brushes or water flossers as recommended. The hygienist can show you the best tools.

Checkups and warning signs

Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the implant, the crown and the surrounding bone. Contact the office if you notice bleeding, swelling, looseness or discomfort around the implant. Early attention to problems gives the best chance of keeping the implant healthy.

Dental implant questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does implant treatment take?

From placement to final crown, it often takes several months to allow the bone to heal. Grafting or extractions may add time. The dentist will outline a timeline for your case.

Do implants hurt?

The procedure is done under anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Some discomfort and swelling afterward is normal and usually manageable with recommended pain relief.

How long do implants last?

With good care and healthy gums, many implants last a very long time. The crown on top may eventually need replacement. Regular checkups and hygiene are key to longevity.

Can I get an implant if I smoke?

It may be possible, but smoking increases the risk of complications. The dentist will discuss the risks honestly and may recommend reducing or stopping smoking before treatment.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

Each option has advantages. Implants avoid altering neighbouring teeth, while bridges may be quicker and avoid surgery. The dentist will help you weigh the options for your mouth.
