A root replacement

Implants replace the root as well as the visible tooth.

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium or a similar material, that is placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial root. Once it has bonded with the bone, it can support a crown, a bridge or a denture. Implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, which is one reason many people consider them.

If you are in Boston and weighing up how to replace a missing tooth, our Port Dover office can walk you through an implant consultation. The dentist will look at your bone, gums and overall health, and explain whether implants, a bridge or a denture best fit your situation and priorities.

Suitability

Not everyone is a candidate right away, and that is normal.

Health factors that matter

General health plays a part in how well implants heal. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, some medications and certain medical treatments can affect the bone’s ability to bond with an implant. Share your full health history honestly at the consultation. The dentist may need information from your physician before making a recommendation, and that extra step is there to protect you.

Bone and gum foundations

An implant needs enough healthy bone to hold it securely, and the gums around it need to be free of active disease. After a tooth has been missing for a while, the bone may shrink. Imaging such as x-rays or a 3D scan can show how much bone is available and whether grafting or other preparation might be discussed first.

Planning

A careful plan sets out each stage before anything starts.

Single tooth or several

A single implant can replace one tooth with a crown. Several implants can support a bridge or stabilise a denture. The number and position of implants depend on your mouth and goals. Ask the dentist to explain why a particular layout is suggested and what each component of the plan is meant to achieve for chewing, appearance and maintenance.

Timelines and stages

Implant treatment usually happens in stages over several months. Healing time is needed after placement for the bone to bond with the implant before the final tooth is attached. If grafting is needed, the timeline may be longer. Make sure you understand the expected sequence, the number of visits and what temporary solutions may be used in the meantime.

Placement

Placement is a surgical procedure with a recovery period.

  1. On the day of surgery

The area is numbed, and the implant is placed into the bone through the gum. Depending on your plan, a healing cap or a temporary tooth may be attached. Some cases are referred to a specialist for placement. Ask who will carry out each stage and whether sedation is an option if you feel anxious about the surgical part.

  2. Healing afterward

Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common for a few days. Follow the aftercare instructions closely, including diet, cleaning and any medication. Avoid smoking, which can interfere with healing. Contact the office if you notice increasing pain, persistent bleeding, fever or a feeling that the implant has moved, so it can be checked promptly by the team.

Long-term care

Implants need daily care just like natural teeth.

  • Cleaning around implants

Implants cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed if plaque builds up, a condition sometimes called peri-implantitis. Brush carefully around the implant, clean between teeth daily and use any interdental brushes or flossers the team recommends. Good habits from the start make a real difference to how long an implant lasts.

  • Regular professional checks

Regular checkups allow the dentist and hygienist to examine the gums, check the crown or denture attached to the implant and look at bone levels on x-rays from time to time. Mention any bleeding, looseness or discomfort around an implant early, as these problems are usually easier to manage when they are caught before they progress.

Dental implant questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does implant treatment take?

It varies, but treatment often spans several months because the bone needs time to bond with the implant. Grafting or other preparation can extend the timeline. The dentist will give you an estimate based on your specific plan.

Is implant surgery painful?

The area is numbed during the procedure, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some soreness and swelling afterward are common and are usually manageable with the aftercare advice and pain relief recommended for you.

Can I get an implant if I have lost bone?

Possibly. Bone grafting or other techniques may be used to build up the area before an implant is placed. Imaging helps the dentist determine whether there is enough bone and what preparation, if any, would be needed.

Do implants last forever?

Implants can last a long time with good care, but they are not guaranteed for life. The crown or denture attached may need replacing eventually, and gum health around the implant must be maintained with daily cleaning and regular visits.

Can smokers get dental implants?

Smoking increases the risk of implant problems and slower healing. The dentist will discuss the risks honestly. Reducing or stopping smoking before and after treatment can improve the chances of the implant healing successfully and lasting.
