Staying ahead of problems

Prevention is quieter than treatment, and usually easier.

Preventive dental care is the combination of professional cleanings, regular exams and daily habits that keep teeth and gums healthy. It is less dramatic than fillings or crowns, but it does much of the work of protecting your mouth. Small, consistent steps often make the biggest difference over a lifetime of teeth.

For Boston families, preventive visits take place at our Port Dover office and can often be grouped together so several people are seen in a single trip. Let the team know about any concerns, such as bleeding gums or sensitivity, so each hygiene appointment can address them.

Professional cleaning

A hygiene appointment reaches what brushing misses.

  1. Removing plaque and tartar

Even with good brushing, tartar can build up in places that are hard to reach, such as behind the lower front teeth and around the back molars. The hygienist removes it from above and just below the gumline, then polishes the teeth. If your gums are tender, mention it; the hygienist can adjust their approach or discuss numbing for comfort.

  2. Checking gum health

Gums are measured and checked for bleeding, recession and pockets around each tooth. These readings help track gum health from one visit to the next. Early gum inflammation can often be reversed with good cleaning at home, while deeper problems may need more frequent visits, a more thorough cleaning or other treatment to bring them under control.

Extra protection

Some teeth benefit from added defences.

Fluoride

Professional fluoride treatments can help strengthen enamel and reduce decay risk, especially for people with a history of cavities, dry mouth, braces or exposed root surfaces. The team will recommend fluoride based on your individual risk rather than applying it as a one-size-fits-all routine, and will explain why it is or is not suggested for you.

Sealants and other measures

Sealants can protect the deep grooves of back teeth from decay, particularly in children and teens whose adult molars have just come in. For adults, toothpastes for sensitivity or products for dry mouth may be suggested instead. Ask what the team recommends for your situation, why it might help and how long it should be tried.

Home routine

Good technique matters as much as frequency.

  • Brushing and cleaning between teeth

Brush twice daily for about two minutes with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, angling the bristles toward the gumline. Clean between teeth every day with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. Ask the hygienist to watch your technique and suggest improvements; small changes in angle or pressure can have a surprisingly big effect.

  • Diet and lifestyle

Frequent sugary snacks or drinks, including juice, pop and sweetened coffee, give decay-causing bacteria repeated fuel throughout the day. Keeping sweets to mealtimes, drinking water and avoiding tobacco all support oral health. If you have a medical condition that affects your mouth, the team can tailor advice to fit it. Small, steady changes tend to stick better than strict rules.

Staying on track

The right visit interval depends on your mouth.

Setting a schedule

Some people do well with routine visits a couple of times a year, while others need more frequent cleanings because of gum disease or heavy tartar build-up. The dentist and hygienist will suggest an interval based on your history and what they see. Keeping to it helps catch changes early, while they are small and simple to manage.

Adapting as life changes

Pregnancy, new medications, braces, ageing and health conditions can all affect oral health in different ways. Let the team know about these changes so prevention can be adjusted to suit. A routine that worked well a few years ago may need updating to stay effective, and the hygienist can help you decide what to change.

Planning your appointment

Booking preventive care from Boston

Call our Port Dover office to schedule a hygiene appointment and checkup. Ask whether family members can be booked close together, which can make the trip from Boston simpler for everyone.

Mention bleeding gums, sensitivity or a dry mouth so the hygienist can plan the visit around those particular concerns from the start.

Preventive care questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Many people have cleanings a couple of times a year, but some need more frequent visits because of gum disease or tartar build-up. The dental team will suggest an interval based on your gum health and history, and adjust it if needed.

Is fluoride safe?

Fluoride is widely used in dentistry to help prevent decay and strengthen enamel. The team will recommend an appropriate amount and type based on your age and risk, and you are welcome to ask questions about it.

Why do my gums bleed when I floss?

Bleeding is often a sign of inflammation caused by plaque along the gumline. Regular, gentle flossing frequently improves it within a week or two. If bleeding continues despite good cleaning, mention it to the hygienist at your next visit.

Do electric toothbrushes work better?

Both manual and electric brushes can be effective with good technique. Some people find electric brushes easier to use well, especially with limited dexterity. Ask the hygienist for advice on which would suit you and how to use it.

Can adults benefit from sealants?

Sealants are most common in children but may help some adults with deep grooves and no existing fillings on those teeth. Ask the dentist whether they would be worthwhile for you, given your history of decay.
