Dentists try to save natural teeth whenever it is reasonable, but sometimes removal is the healthier choice. A tooth may be too broken down to restore, severely infected, loose from advanced gum disease or crowding other teeth. In other cases, removal is part of orthodontic planning. Knowing the reason helps you weigh the decision with confidence.
For Walsingham patients, extractions are carried out at our Port Dover office after an exam and X-rays. The dentist will explain why removal is recommended, whether alternatives exist, how the procedure will be done and how to look after the area while it heals, including options for replacing the tooth later.

Why remove it
Common reasons include deep decay that reaches below the gum, cracks that split the root, infection that cannot be controlled with root canal treatment and loss of bone support from gum disease. Wisdom teeth or crowded teeth may also be removed. The dentist uses the exam and X-rays to show you what was found and why removal is suggested.
Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy might save the tooth and what the outlook would be for each. Sometimes these options are possible but less predictable. Understanding the alternatives, costs and likely results helps you make an informed choice rather than simply accepting removal.
Getting ready
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone medications and supplements, along with heart conditions, diabetes and any bleeding problems. Some conditions require extra precautions or consultation with your physician. Let the team know if you smoke, since smoking can slow healing and increase the risk of complications.
Ask whether you can eat before the appointment and how long it is expected to take. If sedation is planned, arrange for someone to drive you home. Have soft foods and any recommended pain relief ready at home. Planning ahead makes the first day of recovery more comfortable.
The procedure
The area is frozen with local anaesthetic so you feel pressure but not sharp pain. The dentist gently loosens the tooth from the surrounding ligament and bone, then removes it. Gauze is placed to help control bleeding, and you will be given instructions before you leave. Let the dentist know if you feel discomfort at any point.
Some teeth, such as those broken at the gumline or with curved roots, may need a surgical extraction. This can involve a small incision, removing some bone or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will explain beforehand if a surgical approach is likely and whether a referral would be more appropriate.
Healing
Bite on gauze as directed, avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, using straws or smoking for the recommended period, and stick to soft foods. These steps help keep the blood clot in place. Some swelling and discomfort are normal. Call the office if bleeding does not slow, pain worsens after a few days or you develop fever or a foul taste.
Once the area heals, consider whether the missing tooth should be replaced. A gap can allow neighbouring teeth to drift and affect chewing. Options may include an implant, bridge or partial denture. The dentist can explain timing, since some replacements are planned before or at the time of extraction.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the tooth that is bothering you and any swelling or pain. The team will arrange an assessment and explain whether removal can be done at that visit or at a separate appointment.
Plan for a ride home if sedation is involved, and bring a complete list of your medications, including blood thinners and supplements.
Before you book

Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some discomfort afterwards is normal and is usually manageable with the pain relief recommended by the dentist.
It happens when the blood clot in the socket is lost early, exposing bone and causing increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if this occurs, as treatment can ease discomfort.
Initial healing of the gum usually happens over a couple of weeks, while the bone continues to remodel for longer. Healing time depends on the tooth, the procedure and your health.
It depends on the tooth’s position and your goals. Replacing a missing tooth can help chewing, appearance and stop neighbouring teeth from shifting. The dentist will discuss options suited to you.
Many people return to light activities soon after a simple extraction, but it is wise to rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activity for a short period, as advised by the dentist.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Walsingham patients can learn how the dentist decides, what removal involves and how to recover comfortably afterwards.
A fixed bridge can fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Walsingham patients can learn how bridges work, how they are made and how to clean underneath them.
