When a tooth must go

Removing a tooth is a careful decision, not a first resort.

Dentists generally try to keep natural teeth, but sometimes extraction is the most sensible choice. Severe decay, a fractured root, advanced gum disease, crowding or a tooth that repeatedly becomes infected may lead to a recommendation for removal. Understanding why, and what will happen to the space afterward, helps you feel confident in the decision.

If you live in Villa Nova and have been told a tooth may need to come out, our Port Dover office can examine it and explain the reasons. Arrange someone to drive you home if you expect to feel unsteady after the procedure.

Making the decision

Understand why removal is suggested before agreeing to it.

Reasons extraction may be recommended

The dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to look at the root and surrounding bone. Teeth with extensive decay below the gum, vertical root fractures or severe bone loss may not be restorable. Extractions are also sometimes planned for orthodontic reasons or when wisdom teeth are causing problems.

Exploring options to save the tooth

Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy could save the tooth, and what the long-term outlook of each option would be. Sometimes saving a tooth is possible but involves more visits and cost. A clear explanation lets you weigh these factors and choose what is right for you.

Getting ready

Good preparation supports safe treatment and healing.

  • Share your full medical history

Let the dentist know about all medications, especially blood thinners, as well as conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or bone medications. These can affect bleeding and healing. Your dentist may coordinate with your physician if needed. Do not stop any medication without medical advice.

  • Plan for the day of the procedure

Eat a light meal beforehand unless told otherwise. If sedation is planned, follow the specific instructions and arrange for someone to drive you home. Plan a quieter day afterward and stock soft foods at home so you are not running errands immediately after the appointment.

The procedure

The dentist works carefully to remove the tooth with care.

  1. Numbing and loosening the tooth

Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and surrounding area. You may feel pressure as the tooth is gently loosened, but you should not feel sharp pain. Tell the dentist immediately if you do. Once the tooth is removed, gauze is placed to help a blood clot form in the socket.

  2. Simple and surgical extractions

Some teeth require a surgical approach, which may involve a small incision or sectioning the tooth. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will explain what type of extraction is expected for your tooth. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon, which the dentist will discuss with you.

Healing well

The first days after extraction matter most for healing.

Protecting the blood clot

Bite on gauze as directed, avoid spitting, using straws or smoking, and do not rinse vigorously for the first day. These actions can disturb the blood clot and lead to a painful condition called dry socket. Eat soft foods, avoid chewing on that side and follow the aftercare instructions you receive.

Planning for the gap

Once the area heals, ask about replacing the tooth if it was visible or important for chewing. Bridges, implants and dentures are common options. Some back teeth can be left without replacement. Contact the office if you have increasing pain, swelling, fever or bleeding that will not stop.

Tooth extraction questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will an extraction hurt?

Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some soreness is normal afterward. Follow the dentist’s advice for managing discomfort.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost too early, exposing bone. It can be very painful. Avoid smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing to reduce the risk, and call the office if pain increases after a few days.

How long does healing take?

Initial healing often takes a week or two, though bone continues to remodel for longer. The dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions.

Do I need to replace the tooth?

Not always. It depends on its location and function. The dentist will explain the potential effects of leaving a gap and discuss replacement options.

When should I call after an extraction?

Call if bleeding persists, pain worsens after a few days, or swelling or fever develops. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing.
