Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

Teeth are removed for many reasons: severe decay, advanced gum disease, a crack below the gum line, crowding before orthodontic treatment or a wisdom tooth causing trouble. Extraction is usually recommended after other options have been weighed. Understanding why it is suggested and what replacement choices exist helps you decide with confidence.
Turkey Point patients can have a troublesome tooth assessed at our Port Dover office. If you are only in the area for part of the year, mention it so the team can talk about healing time and any follow-up you will need.

Making the decision
A tooth may be beyond repair if decay has destroyed too much structure, a fracture extends into the root, or gum disease has left too little bone support. Sometimes a healthy tooth is removed to make room for orthodontic movement. The dentist will explain the specific reason in your case and show you what X-rays reveal.
Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy could save the tooth, and what the chances of success would be. Ask too about what happens to the space afterward. Knowing your replacement options, such as a bridge, implant or denture, before removal can help you plan timing and cost.
Getting ready
Tell the dentist about heart conditions, bleeding disorders, diabetes, bone medications, blood thinners and any recent surgery. Some medicines affect bleeding or healing. Do not stop a prescription without speaking to your doctor. The dentist may need to coordinate with your physician before scheduling the extraction.
Arrange for someone to drive you if sedation will be used. Eat a light meal beforehand unless told otherwise, and have soft foods ready at home. Plan a quieter day afterward, especially if you were thinking of swimming, boating or vigorous activity, since rest helps the area begin to heal.
The procedure
The dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding gum thoroughly before starting. You will feel pressure as the tooth is loosened but should not feel sharp pain; raise a hand if you do. Some teeth, particularly those with curved roots or that are broken, may need to be removed in sections, which the dentist will explain.
Once the tooth is out, you will bite on gauze to help a blood clot form. Stitches may be placed in some cases. The dentist will give written aftercare instructions and explain what to expect over the next few days. Ask about pain relief that is safe for you before you leave.
Healing well
Avoid spitting, using straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the period advised, as these can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful dry socket. Stick to soft, cool foods at first and chew on the other side. Mild swelling and discomfort are normal. Contact the office if pain increases after a few days, bleeding persists or you develop fever.
Once healing is underway, you can consider whether and how to replace the tooth. Leaving a gap can let neighbouring teeth shift over time. The dentist can discuss implants, bridges or partial dentures and how long to wait before each. Seasonal residents may want to plan this around their time in the area.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the tooth and any symptoms. The team will arrange an assessment first, and the dentist will confirm whether removal is recommended.
Bring a complete medication list. If sedation is planned, arrange a driver for the trip back to Turkey Point.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The area is numbed before the extraction, so most people feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some soreness afterward is expected and can usually be managed with recommended pain relief.
Initial healing of the gum often takes one to two weeks, while bone continues to remodel for longer. The dentist will explain what to expect for your specific extraction.
Dry socket happens when the blood clot is lost too early, leaving bone exposed and causing increasing pain a few days later. Follow aftercare instructions and call the office if it occurs.
It is usually best to rest for at least the first day and avoid strenuous activity. Ask the dentist when it is reasonable to resume swimming or other exercise.
Not always, but leaving a gap can affect chewing and allow teeth to drift. The dentist can explain whether replacement is advisable and which options fit your situation.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removal. Turkey Point patients can learn how the decision is made, what surgery involves and how to plan recovery around summer plans.
A bridge can fill the space left by a missing tooth using neighbouring teeth for support. Turkey Point patients can weigh bridges against other options in Port Dover.
