When removal is the best option

Removing a tooth is a decision worth understanding fully.

Dentists generally try to save natural teeth, but sometimes extraction is the safest or most practical choice. A tooth may be too badly decayed or broken to repair, loosened by advanced gum disease, causing crowding, or affected by infection that other treatment cannot resolve. Understanding the reason helps you feel confident about the decision.

When an extraction is being considered for someone from Townsend, the assessment and procedure take place at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review X-rays, explain why removal is recommended, discuss any alternatives and talk through healing and the options for replacing the tooth afterwards.

Why extraction?

Extraction is recommended when keeping the tooth carries more risk.

Common situations that lead to extraction

Teeth that are broken below the gumline, severely decayed, very loose from bone loss or repeatedly infected may not be predictable to save. Extractions are also sometimes part of orthodontic planning or needed for wisdom teeth that cannot erupt properly. The dentist will show you what they see on the X-ray and explain their reasoning.

Questions to ask before agreeing

Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy could keep the tooth, and what the realistic outlook of each would be over the coming years. Find out what is likely to happen if you wait. Knowing the alternatives and their limits helps make sure extraction is the right choice for you, rather than simply the quickest one.

Preparing for the procedure

Good preparation supports safe treatment and healing.

  • Share your full medical history

Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone-strengthening drugs and supplements, as well as conditions such as diabetes or heart problems. Some may affect bleeding or healing and could require coordination with your doctor. Do not stop any medication without medical advice; the dentist will explain whether adjustments are needed.

  • Plan for the day of treatment

Eat a light meal beforehand unless told otherwise, and arrange to rest afterwards. If sedation is planned, you will need someone to drive you home. Ask what to have ready at home, such as gauze, soft foods and pain relief, so you are not searching for supplies once you return.

On the day

You should feel pressure, not sharp pain.

  1. Numbing and loosening the tooth

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and the dentist confirms you are comfortable before starting. Instruments are used to gently loosen the tooth from the surrounding ligament and bone. You may feel firm pressure or hear sounds, but sharp pain should be reported immediately so more anaesthetic can be given.

  2. Simple versus surgical removal

A tooth that is visible and intact can often be removed in one piece. Teeth that are broken, have curved roots or are partially beneath the gum may need a surgical approach, sometimes with stitches. The dentist will explain beforehand which type of extraction is likely and whether a referral may be appropriate.

Healing and next steps

Careful aftercare helps the site heal well.

Protecting the clot in the first days

Bite on gauze as instructed, avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, drinking through a straw or smoking for the first days, since these can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Some swelling and tenderness are expected. Contact the office if bleeding persists, pain increases after a few days or fever develops.

Replacing the missing tooth

Depending on the tooth’s position, you may want to replace it to maintain chewing, appearance and the position of neighbouring teeth, which can drift into an empty space. Implants, bridges and partial dentures are common options. The dentist can discuss timing, since some replacements are planned soon after extraction and others only once the area has fully healed.

Planning your appointment

Arranging an extraction assessment.

Call our Port Dover office and describe the tooth, any pain or swelling and whether another dentist has recommended removal. The team will arrange an exam so the dentist can review the situation with you.

Bring a full list of medications and supplements, any X-rays you have, and plan for someone to accompany you if sedation is discussed.

Questions about tooth extractions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does having a tooth pulled hurt?

The area is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during the extraction. Soreness afterwards is normal and is usually managed with pain relief suited to you. Report any severe or worsening pain.

How long does it take to heal after an extraction?

The gum usually begins to close within a couple of weeks, while bone continues to heal for longer. Healing varies with the tooth, the type of extraction and your health. Follow the aftercare instructions closely.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost or fails to form, exposing bone and causing strong pain a few days after extraction. Avoiding smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing reduces the risk. Call the office if it happens.

Do I need to replace an extracted tooth?

Not always. Some back teeth can be left unreplaced without much effect, but replacing a tooth often helps with chewing, appearance and keeping neighbouring teeth from shifting. The dentist will explain whether replacement is advisable for that particular tooth.

Can I go to work after an extraction?

Many people return to light activities the next day, but it depends on the procedure and how you feel. If sedation was used, plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise initially.
