Dentists try to save natural teeth when they can, but sometimes removal is the best option. A tooth may be too decayed or broken to repair, loose from advanced gum disease, impacted, or causing crowding. An extraction can relieve pain and stop infection, but it also leaves a space that may affect chewing and neighbouring teeth over time.
Teeterville patients can be assessed at our Port Dover office to discuss whether removal is necessary and what alternatives exist. The dentist will explain the procedure, the recovery and the options for replacing the tooth, so you can plan the appointment, the drive home and the days that follow.

Is removal needed
Severe decay, a crack extending into the root, an infection that cannot be resolved with root canal, advanced bone loss around the tooth and crowding before orthodontics are common reasons. Wisdom teeth that are impacted or repeatedly inflamed may also be removed. X-rays help the dentist judge the tooth’s condition, the shape of its roots and how close it sits to nerves or sinuses.
Ask whether the tooth could be saved with another treatment, and what the long-term outlook would be if you tried. Find out what happens if you delay removal and how the space might affect nearby teeth and your bite. Knowing your options helps you make a choice you are comfortable with rather than feeling rushed into a permanent decision.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about blood thinners, heart conditions, diabetes, bisphosphonates or other medications, as they can affect bleeding and healing. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own; the dentist may need to consult your physician first. Mention allergies and any previous reactions to anaesthetic or pain medication, so a safe plan can be put in place ahead of time.
If sedation is planned, you will need someone to drive you home to Teeterville and possibly stay with you for a while. Even with local anaesthetic only, some people prefer to have company for the trip. Stock up on soft foods, ice packs and any recommended pain relief before your appointment, so you can rest as soon as you get home.
The procedure
After the area is numb, the dentist gently loosens the tooth and removes it. You may feel pressure and some pushing but should not feel sharp pain. Tell the dentist if you do, so more anaesthetic can be given. Gauze is placed to help a blood clot form, and you will receive instructions on biting pressure and how long to keep it in place.
Teeth that are broken at the gum line or have curved roots may need a surgical approach, which can involve a small incision or sectioning the tooth into pieces. Stitches might be placed to support healing. Some complex cases are referred to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain what is planned for your tooth and why, before anything begins.
Healing and replacement
For the first day, avoid rinsing hard, spitting, using straws or smoking, as these can dislodge the clot and cause a painful dry socket. Eat soft foods, rest with your head raised and follow pain relief instructions. Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, pain worsens after a few days, or you notice increasing swelling or fever.
Once healing is underway, discuss whether to replace the tooth. Options may include an implant, a bridge or a partial denture, each with different timelines and upkeep. Some back teeth may not need replacing, depending on your bite. Ask about timing, since some replacements are best planned before or shortly after the extraction to protect the bone.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of the tooth. Describe any pain or swelling, and let the team know about medications that might affect bleeding or healing.
Plan for a quiet rest of the day after the procedure, and arrange a driver if sedation will be used for your extraction.

Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so most people feel pressure but not sharp pain during the extraction. Some soreness afterward is common and usually manageable with recommended pain relief, rest and cold compresses over the first couple of days.
Initial healing of the gum often takes a week or two, while the bone underneath continues to remodel over the following months. Following aftercare instructions closely, avoiding smoking and eating soft foods helps recovery go smoothly and lowers the risk of complications.
It occurs when the blood clot is lost too early, exposing bone in the socket. It can cause throbbing pain a few days after extraction, sometimes spreading toward the ear. Contact the office if you suspect it so the area can be dressed and soothed.
It depends on its location and your bite. Replacing some teeth helps prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting and supports chewing and appearance. The dentist can explain whether replacement is recommended in your case and which options suit your health and budget.
Many people return to light activities within a day or two after a simple extraction. Surgical extractions or those done with sedation may require more rest. Ask the dentist what to expect for your specific procedure so you can plan time off accordingly.
Not all wisdom teeth need removal. Teeterville patients can learn how impacted or problem wisdom teeth are assessed, what surgery involves and how to recover.
Missing a tooth between two others? Teeterville patients can learn how a fixed bridge is planned, what happens to nearby teeth and how to clean under it.
