Every dental service for Silver HillRemoving a tooth with care
Dentists generally try to save natural teeth, but there are times when an extraction is the most sensible option. A tooth may be too broken to repair, badly infected, loosened by advanced gum disease or crowding other teeth. Sometimes a tooth is removed as part of orthodontic treatment or before dentures are made.
For patients from Silver Hill, extractions are assessed and, where appropriate, performed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why removal is recommended, what the procedure involves and how the space might be managed afterward. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon.

Why remove a tooth
Severe decay that has destroyed much of the tooth, fractures extending below the gum, infection that cannot be treated with a root canal, advanced gum disease and impacted or crowded teeth are typical reasons. Baby teeth that do not fall out on schedule can also need removal to make way for adult teeth.
Ask whether the tooth could be saved with another treatment, what the risks of leaving it are, and how removal might affect your bite and neighbouring teeth. Understanding options for replacing the tooth, such as an implant, bridge or partial denture, helps you plan ahead before the extraction happens.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone-strengthening drugs and supplements, as well as conditions like diabetes, heart problems or a weakened immune system. Some situations require coordination with your physician before an extraction. X-rays are usually taken to show the roots and surrounding bone.
Eat a light meal beforehand unless you are instructed otherwise. If sedation is planned, follow the specific instructions you are given and arrange for someone to drive you home. Have soft foods, gauze and any recommended pain relief ready at home so you can rest after the appointment.
The extraction
Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and surrounding area. Once you are frozen, the dentist gently loosens the tooth and removes it. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain; let the dentist know if you do. Gauze is placed over the site and you are asked to bite down to help a clot form.
Teeth that are broken at the gumline, have curved roots or are impacted may need a surgical approach, which can involve a small incision or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches are sometimes placed. In more complex situations, the dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon for treatment.
Healing well
Keep gentle pressure on the gauze as directed. Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, drinking through a straw or smoking for the period advised, since these can dislodge the clot. Rest with your head raised and use cold compresses on the cheek to limit swelling. Take pain relief as directed by the dentist or pharmacist.
Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Gentle salt-water rinses may be recommended after the first day. Contact the office if pain increases after several days, bleeding does not stop with pressure, swelling worsens or you develop a fever. These can signal complications such as dry socket or infection.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Mention any medications or health conditions and whether you are in pain. If sedation is planned, arrange a driver for the trip home.
Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Stock up on soft foods and gauze before your appointment so you can head straight home.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some soreness is normal once the freezing wears off, and the dentist will explain how to manage discomfort during recovery.
A dry socket can occur when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing bone. It usually causes increasing pain a few days after removal. Contact the office if you suspect it, as it can be treated.
Initial healing of the gum often takes a week or two, while the bone continues to remodel for longer. Healing time depends on the tooth, the extraction and your health. Follow all aftercare instructions.
It depends on the tooth’s position and your goals. Gaps can lead neighbouring teeth to shift and affect chewing. The dentist can discuss implants, bridges or partial dentures and the timing of each.
After a simple extraction with local anaesthetic, many people can drive. If sedation is used, you will need someone else to drive and stay with you as directed. Confirm the arrangements beforehand.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removal, but impacted or infected ones often do. Silver Hill patients can learn how the decision is made and how recovery goes.
A fixed bridge can fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Silver Hill patients can compare bridges with other options and learn how they are cared for.
