When keeping a tooth is not possible

Removing a tooth is a considered decision, with a plan for healing and the space it leaves.

Dentists aim to save natural teeth where they reasonably can. Sometimes, though, a tooth is too badly decayed, fractured or loose from gum disease to be repaired. Extraction may also be recommended for crowding, impacted wisdom teeth or before certain treatments. Understanding why removal is suggested helps you feel confident about the plan.

Renton patients can have extractions assessed and carried out at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain the reasons, review your medical history, describe what the procedure involves and talk about whether and how to replace the tooth once the area has healed properly.

Why removal?

The dentist will explain why a tooth cannot reasonably be kept.

Common reasons for extraction

Extensive decay that has destroyed much of the tooth, a fracture extending below the gum, advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, or an infection that cannot be resolved are typical reasons. Wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing problems may also be removed. The dentist will review X-rays and findings with you in detail.

Alternatives to consider

In some cases, root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy might save the tooth. Ask the dentist whether those options are realistic and what the outlook would be. Sometimes saving a tooth is possible but carries a poor long-term prognosis. Weighing those factors together leads to a better decision that you can feel settled about.

Before the procedure

Preparation helps the extraction and healing go smoothly.

  • Health history and medications

Tell the dentist about all medications, including blood thinners, and about conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or a history of bisphosphonate use. Some may affect bleeding or healing and require coordination with your physician. Do not stop prescribed medicines without medical advice. Mention any allergies as well, including to latex or antibiotics. This keeps you safe.

  • Practical planning

Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. If sedation is used, arrange for someone to drive you home. Stock up on soft foods and have gauze available. For Renton patients, consider how far you will be from the office during the first day or two, and ask how to reach the team if questions arise.

The extraction

The dentist keeps you comfortable and explains each step.

  1. Numbing and removal

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. For a simple extraction, the tooth is gently loosened and removed. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain; tell the dentist if you do. Some teeth require a surgical approach, sectioning the tooth or removing a little bone, which the dentist will explain beforehand in plain terms.

  2. Immediate aftercare

After removal, gauze is placed over the socket and you bite down gently to help a clot form. Stitches may be used. You will receive written or verbal aftercare instructions. Keep gauze in place for the recommended time and avoid rinsing vigorously so the clot is not disturbed. Gentle care in the first day matters most.

Healing well

Following instructions closely supports smooth healing.

The first few days

Avoid spitting, drinking through a straw and smoking for the period advised, as these can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful dry socket. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Use pain relief as directed. Call the office if bleeding continues, swelling grows after a few days, fever develops or pain worsens.

Replacing the tooth

Once healing is underway, think about whether to replace the tooth. Implants, bridges and partial dentures each have advantages. Gaps can lead to shifting of nearby teeth or changes in bite. The dentist will discuss timing and options. For a wisdom tooth, replacement is usually not needed. You can take time to decide on other teeth.

Extraction questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does having a tooth removed hurt?

The area is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during the extraction. Some soreness afterward is normal and can usually be managed with recommended pain relief and rest. Tell the dentist if you feel sharp pain.

What is a dry socket?

It occurs when the blood clot in the socket is lost or does not form properly, exposing bone. It can be painful. Avoiding straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing helps prevent it. Call the office if pain increases a few days after extraction.

How long does healing take?

Initial healing of the gum often occurs over a week or two, while the bone continues to remodel for months. Healing times vary with the tooth, the procedure and individual health. Follow-up visits help confirm progress.

Do I need to replace the extracted tooth?

It depends on which tooth and your goals. Replacing it can help prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting and support chewing. The dentist will discuss whether an implant, bridge or partial denture suits you best, and when.

Can I go back to work the next day?

Many people return to light activities within a day or two, but it depends on the procedure and your job. Physically demanding work may need more rest. Ask the dentist for advice specific to your extraction.
