Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseWhen removal is the right call
Dentists generally try to keep natural teeth, but sometimes extraction is the most sensible choice. A tooth may be too badly decayed or broken to restore, loosened by advanced gum disease, impacted or in the way of orthodontic treatment. Knowing why removal is recommended, and what alternatives exist, makes the decision easier.
The dentist at our Port Dover office will examine the tooth and discuss options with patients coming from Port Ryerse. If extraction is the right step, you will receive clear guidance on preparation, the procedure itself, aftercare and future replacement, so there are few surprises along the way.

Why remove it
Severe decay that reaches below the gum, cracks extending into the root, infection that cannot be resolved and significant bone loss from gum disease are common reasons for removal. Crowding, baby teeth that will not fall out and wisdom teeth causing problems may also lead to extraction recommendations.
Before agreeing, ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or periodontal care could save the tooth and what the long-term outlook would be. Sometimes saving a tooth is possible but less predictable. Understanding costs, timelines and success rates of each path helps you make an informed choice.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bisphosphonates and supplements, along with heart conditions, diabetes or other health issues. Some situations require advice from your physician first. Mention any allergies, including to anaesthetics or antibiotics. Follow any pre-procedure instructions you are given.
Arrange to rest after the extraction, and stock up on soft foods and any recommended pain relief. If sedation is used, you will need someone to drive you home. Eat a light meal beforehand unless told otherwise. Allow extra time for travel so you are not rushed on arrival.
The procedure
For a tooth that is fully visible, the area is numbed and the tooth is gently loosened and removed. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Tell the dentist if anything is uncomfortable. Gauze is placed to help a blood clot form, which is essential for healing.
Teeth that are broken at the gum line, have curved roots or are impacted may need a surgical approach, which can involve a small incision or sectioning the tooth. Stitches are sometimes placed. Complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain what to expect.
Healing and next steps
Bite on gauze as instructed, avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, using straws and smoking for the first day or more, as these can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Swelling and tenderness are normal for a few days. Increasing pain after day two or three may indicate dry socket and should be reported.
Depending on the tooth, you may want to replace it to maintain chewing and prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting. Options include implants, bridges and partial dentures, each with different timing. Ask about replacement before extraction so planning, such as bone preservation, can be considered.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Mention pain, swelling or medical conditions so the team can schedule appropriately and advise on preparation.
If sedation is planned, organize a driver in advance and confirm fasting or medication instructions before the day.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Discomfort afterward is usually managed with recommended pain relief and typically improves over several days.
Initial healing of the gum usually takes one to two weeks, while bone underneath takes longer to fill in. Recovery varies with the type of extraction and your health. Follow aftercare advice closely.
Dry socket happens when the blood clot is lost or fails to form, exposing bone. It typically causes increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if this occurs so it can be treated.
Not always, but replacing it can help chewing, appearance and prevent shifting of nearby teeth. The dentist will discuss whether replacement is advisable and which option suits you.
Many people return to light activities within a day or two after a simple extraction. Surgical extractions may need more rest. Avoid strenuous activity at first, and ask the dentist for specific guidance.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removal. Port Ryerse patients can have theirs assessed, compare options and plan recovery with our Port Dover dental team.
A bridge fills a gap by anchoring a false tooth to its neighbours. Port Ryerse patients can compare bridges with implants and dentures at our Port Dover office.
