Dentists generally try to keep natural teeth, but extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely decayed, cracked below the gumline, loosened by advanced gum disease or causing crowding. Sometimes removal relieves pain and stops infection from spreading. Knowing why a tooth needs to come out, and what will replace it, helps you approach the procedure with confidence.
Peacock Point patients can have extractions assessed and carried out at our Port Dover office. Because healing takes time, consider your plans for the days after the procedure, especially if you will be heading back to the cottage or travelling soon afterward.

Deciding
A tooth may need to be removed if it is broken beyond repair, has extensive decay, has lost much of its supporting bone or has an infection that cannot be treated effectively. Teeth that are impacted or crowding others may also be candidates. The dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to show you what they see.
Before agreeing to an extraction, ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy could save the tooth. Sometimes the outlook for those options is poor, and extraction is the more predictable choice. A frank discussion of the pros and cons of keeping versus removing the tooth helps you make an informed decision.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bisphosphonates and any supplements. Mention heart conditions, diabetes, bleeding disorders or recent hospital stays. These can affect how the extraction is planned and whether any precautions or consultation with your physician are needed. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice from the prescriber.
Arrange to rest for the remainder of the day. Have soft foods, cold packs and any recommended pain relief ready at home. If sedation will be used, you will need someone to drive you. Ask whether there are restrictions on eating or drinking beforehand, and plan to avoid strenuous activity for a short time afterwards.
The extraction
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. For a simple extraction, the dentist loosens the tooth and removes it. Surgical extractions, needed for broken or impacted teeth, may involve a small incision or dividing the tooth into pieces. You should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Let the dentist know if you feel discomfort.
A gauze pad is placed over the site and you will be asked to bite firmly to help a blood clot form. Stitches may be used in some cases. The team will give written aftercare instructions. Ask about pain management, signs of complications and when you can resume normal eating and activity before you leave.
Healing
Avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, drinking through a straw or smoking for the period advised, as these can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful dry socket. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Gentle salt water rinses may be recommended after the first day. Call the office if bleeding continues, swelling increases or pain worsens after a few days.
Once the site heals, discuss whether to replace the tooth. Implants, bridges and partial dentures each have different requirements and timelines. Some replacements work best when planned before or at the time of extraction. Leaving a gap can allow neighbouring teeth to shift, so ask about the effects of each option for your mouth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss a tooth that may need removal. Describe your symptoms and any swelling, so the team can advise how soon you should be seen.
Bring a full medication list, and plan for someone to drive you if sedation is being considered for the procedure.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during the extraction. Some soreness afterward is normal and can usually be managed with recommended pain relief. Follow aftercare instructions to support healing.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing bone and causing significant pain a few days later. Avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing. Contact the office if pain increases rather than improves.
The gums usually heal over the site within a couple of weeks, while the bone underneath takes longer. Healing time varies with the tooth, the complexity of the extraction and your overall health.
In many cases, replacing a missing tooth helps maintain chewing, appearance and the position of neighbouring teeth. Options include implants, bridges and partial dentures. The dentist will discuss what suits your situation.
Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. If you had sedation, you will need someone to drive. Have soft foods and supplies ready, and keep the office number handy in case you have questions during recovery.
Impacted or troublesome wisdom teeth may need removal. Peacock Point patients can learn about assessment, the procedure and recovery planning at our Port Dover office.
A fixed bridge can fill the gap left by a missing tooth. Peacock Point patients can compare bridges with other replacements and plan the visits at our Port Dover office.
