When removal makes sense

Taking out a tooth is a decision worth understanding fully.

Dentists generally try to keep natural teeth, but sometimes removal is the healthiest option. Severe decay, a fracture below the gum, advanced gum disease, crowding or an impacted wisdom tooth may all lead to an extraction recommendation. Knowing why it is suggested, and what will fill the space afterward, helps you make a confident decision.

If you live in Nanticoke and have been told a tooth may need to come out, the dentist at our Port Dover office can explain the reasons, discuss alternatives where they exist and describe what to expect during the procedure and the healing that follows.

Why remove it

The reason behind the recommendation matters.

Teeth that cannot be restored

A tooth may be considered non-restorable when decay or a crack extends too far, when there is not enough structure left to support a filling or crown, or when infection cannot be controlled. Advanced gum disease that has destroyed much of the supporting bone can also leave a tooth too loose to keep comfortably or safely in the long run.

Other reasons for removal

Extractions are sometimes recommended for orthodontic reasons, for wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing problems, or before certain medical treatments. Ask the dentist to explain the specific reason, whether root canal treatment or another approach could save the tooth, and what might happen if you chose to wait before deciding.

Planning

Share your full health picture before an extraction.

  • Health history and medications

Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone-strengthening drugs and supplements, as well as conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or a weakened immune system. These can affect bleeding, healing and infection risk. Your physician may need to be consulted in some cases before the extraction can be safely scheduled.

  • Thinking about the gap

Before the tooth is removed, discuss whether and how you might replace it. Options can include an implant, bridge or partial denture. Some replacements work best when planned ahead, for example by preserving bone at the extraction site. For back teeth, leaving a gap may be acceptable, but ask how it might affect neighbouring teeth.

The procedure

Most extractions are done with local anaesthetic.

  1. Numbing and removal

The area is numbed thoroughly before anything begins. You may feel pressure as the tooth is loosened, but you should not feel sharp pain; let the dentist know if you do. Simple extractions of visible teeth are often relatively quick. Gauze is placed afterward to help a blood clot form in the socket, which is an important part of healing.

  2. Surgical extractions

Teeth that are broken at the gum line, have curved roots or are impacted may need a surgical approach, which can involve a small incision or sectioning the tooth. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will explain what is planned in advance. Some complex cases may be referred to an oral surgeon for treatment.

Healing

Protect the clot while the socket heals.

The first day or two

Bite on gauze as instructed and rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid spitting forcefully, drinking through a straw, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the period advised, as these can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Use cold compresses for swelling and take pain relief as recommended by the dentist.

Warning signs to report

Call the office if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, pain worsens after a few days, you develop a fever or swelling increases. Severe pain starting a few days later may indicate a dry socket. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly spreading swelling, which need immediate attention.

Planning your appointment

Planning an extraction from Nanticoke

Contact our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of the tooth in question. Mention any pain, swelling or medical conditions so the team can schedule an appropriate appointment.

Plan to rest afterward and consider having someone drive you home, especially if sedation or a surgical extraction is involved.

Tooth removal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is there an alternative to pulling the tooth?

Sometimes. Root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy may save a tooth in certain situations. The dentist will explain whether any alternatives are realistic for your tooth and the benefits and risks of each option.

How long does healing take after an extraction?

Initial healing of the gum often takes a week or two, while the bone underneath continues to remodel over a longer period. Recovery varies by person and the complexity of the extraction. Follow your aftercare instructions closely.

What is a dry socket?

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the socket, exposing bone and causing significant pain a few days after extraction. Avoiding straws, smoking and forceful spitting helps reduce the risk. Contact the office if you suspect it.

Do I need to replace an extracted tooth?

Not always, but missing teeth can affect chewing and allow neighbouring teeth to shift. The dentist can explain whether replacement is advisable and what options might suit you, such as an implant, bridge or partial denture.

Can I go to work the next day?

Many people return to light activities within a day or two after a simple extraction. Surgical extractions may need more recovery time. Ask the dentist for guidance based on the procedure planned and the nature of your work.
