Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsWhen removal is the right call
Teeth are removed for a range of reasons, including severe decay, advanced gum disease, a fracture below the gumline, crowding before orthodontic treatment or wisdom teeth that cannot erupt properly. Keeping natural teeth is usually preferred, so the dentist will normally explore whether a tooth can be saved before recommending removal.
Lynedoch patients facing a possible extraction can discuss the reasons and alternatives at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain what the procedure involves, how to prepare and what recovery may look like, so you can plan time off and the ride home if needed.

Is removal needed
The dentist examines the tooth and usually takes an X-ray to see the root, surrounding bone and any infection. A tooth that is badly broken, very loose or extensively decayed may not be restorable. Ask the dentist to show you the findings and explain why keeping the tooth is unlikely to succeed.
Sometimes root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy could save a tooth, though these may involve more visits. Ask what alternatives exist and how their likely outcomes compare. Understanding both paths helps you make a decision that suits your health, goals and circumstances.
Preparing
Share your full medical history, including blood thinners, bone medications, diabetes, heart conditions and allergies. Some conditions or medicines require special precautions. Never stop a prescribed medicine without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it. The dentist may also want to consult your physician beforehand.
Eat a light meal beforehand unless instructed otherwise, and arrange to rest afterward. If sedation is planned, you will need someone to drive you home. Ask what supplies to have ready, such as gauze, soft foods and any recommended pain relief, before leaving for the appointment.
The procedure
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic so you feel pressure rather than sharp pain. The dentist gently loosens the tooth from its socket and removes it. Let the team know if you feel discomfort at any point. Additional freezing or a brief pause can usually be provided.
Teeth that are broken at the gumline, have curved roots or are impacted may need a surgical approach, which can involve a small incision or dividing the tooth. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will explain the plan beforehand and whether referral to a specialist is advisable for complex cases.
Healing well
Bite on gauze to control bleeding and rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, drinking through a straw or smoking, which can disturb the clot. Eat soft foods and keep the head elevated. Call if bleeding does not slow, pain increases after a few days or swelling worsens.
Depending on the tooth’s location, you may want to replace it with an implant, bridge or denture. Some options require healing time before they can begin. Ask about timing and what might happen to nearby teeth if the gap is left. The dentist can help you plan the next step.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss the tooth and arrange an assessment. Plan to rest after treatment and arrange a driver if sedation will be used.
Bring your complete medication list and let the team know about any bleeding disorders or recent hospital visits.

Freezing is used so you should feel pressure rather than sharp pain during the procedure. Soreness afterward is common and usually manageable with recommended pain relief. Contact the office if pain worsens.
Initial healing of the gum often takes a week or two, while the bone continues to remodel for longer. Recovery varies by person and procedure. Follow aftercare instructions to support the process.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the extraction site, exposing bone. It can cause increasing pain a few days later. Avoid straws and smoking, and call the office if pain intensifies.
With local freezing alone, many people can drive. If sedation is used, you will need someone else to drive you. Confirm the plan with the office ahead of time.
It depends on the tooth’s location and your preferences. Replacement can help maintain chewing and prevent shifting of nearby teeth. The dentist will explain options and timing.
Wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing pain may need removal. Lynedoch patients can learn about assessment, referral, surgery day and healing with our Port Dover team.
A fixed bridge can fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Lynedoch patients can compare bridges, implants and partials with our Port Dover dentist.
