Extraction may be recommended when a tooth is too damaged by decay or fracture to repair, loosened by advanced gum disease, crowding other teeth or causing repeated infection. Before agreeing, it helps to know why the tooth cannot be kept, what alternatives exist and how the space will be managed afterward, since gaps can affect chewing and neighbouring teeth.
Long Point patients can have the tooth assessed at our Port Dover office. Allow time after the appointment to rest, and consider your plans for the following days when choosing a date.

Why extract
Common reasons include a tooth broken below the gumline, decay too extensive to restore, severe bone loss from gum disease, a cracked root or impacted wisdom teeth. Sometimes teeth are removed to make space for orthodontic treatment. The dentist will explain the specific findings, often with X-rays.
Ask whether the tooth could be saved with root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy, and what the outlook would be. Sometimes saving a tooth is possible but uncertain. Knowing the options and their likely outcomes helps you make a decision you are comfortable with.
Preparation
Tell the dentist about all medicines, especially blood thinners, bone-strengthening drugs and supplements, as well as conditions such as diabetes or heart problems. Some situations require coordination with your physician. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own; follow guidance from the dentist and your prescribing doctor.
Eat a light meal beforehand unless instructed otherwise. Arrange for a ride if sedation is planned. Stock soft foods at home or at the cottage, and plan a quieter day afterward. Avoid booking strenuous activities, long swims or heavy lifting immediately after the extraction.
The procedure
The area is numbed so you feel pressure but not sharp pain. A simple extraction loosens and removes a visible tooth. A surgical extraction may be needed for broken or impacted teeth and can involve a small incision or sectioning the tooth. The dentist will explain which applies to you.
After the tooth is removed, gauze is placed to help a blood clot form. Stitches may be used. You will receive written aftercare instructions. If anything feels unexpected during the procedure, signal the dentist so they can pause and check your comfort.
Healing and next steps
Bite on gauze as directed, avoid spitting, using straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the period advised, so the clot stays in place. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Follow pain relief instructions. Contact the office if bleeding persists, pain increases after a few days or swelling grows.
Once the site heals, discuss whether the space should be filled with an implant, bridge or partial denture. Gaps can allow nearby teeth to tilt or drift and may affect chewing. Back teeth like wisdom teeth may not need replacement, but other teeth often benefit from a plan.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office for an assessment of the tooth. If removal is recommended, ask about preparation steps and whether you will need someone to drive you home.
Bring a full medication list, including supplements, and mention any history of slow healing or bleeding problems.

Freezing keeps the area numb, so you should feel pressure rather than sharp pain. Some soreness afterward is normal and usually improves within a few days with recommended pain relief.
Initial healing usually takes a week or two, with the bone continuing to remodel for longer. Recovery depends on the tooth, the procedure and your health. Follow aftercare instructions closely.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost or fails to form, exposing bone. It can cause throbbing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if pain worsens instead of improving.
Not always, but many teeth play an important role in chewing and keeping others in position. The dentist will discuss whether replacement is advisable and which options suit you.
Ask the dentist about timing. Strenuous activity soon after an extraction can increase bleeding. It is generally wise to rest for the first day and follow the specific aftercare advice you receive.
Impacted or partly erupted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling and infection. Long Point patients can learn about assessment and removal in Port Dover.
A bridge spans a gap using neighbouring teeth for support. Long Point patients can compare bridges with implants and partials at our Port Dover office.
