Dentists try to keep natural teeth whenever possible, but sometimes removal is the most sensible option. A tooth may be too badly decayed or fractured to restore, loosened by advanced gum disease, crowding other teeth or causing repeated infection. In each case, the dentist weighs the benefits of extraction against what it means for your bite and future options.
Patients from Langton can have a troublesome tooth assessed at our Port Dover office before any decision is made. The dentist will explain why extraction is being considered, what alternatives exist and how to prepare, including arranging a ride home if you expect to feel unwell afterwards.

Why remove a tooth
Severe decay that reaches below the gum, a crack that runs down the root, repeated abscesses after root canal treatment and teeth that have lost most of their bone support are common reasons for removal. The dentist will explain whether a tooth could be saved with root canal treatment, a crown or gum therapy, and how predictable those options would be.
Sometimes healthy teeth are removed to make space for orthodontic treatment or because they are crowded, impacted or positioned in a way that harms neighbouring teeth. These decisions are typically made in coordination with an orthodontist or specialist. Ask about the reasons in detail and the effect on your overall treatment plan before agreeing to anything.
Before the procedure
Tell the dentist about every medication and supplement you take, especially blood thinners, bone-strengthening drugs and anything that affects healing. Mention heart conditions, diabetes, bleeding disorders or recent surgeries. Do not stop any prescribed medication without speaking to your physician first. The dentist may coordinate with your doctor if necessary, which can take a little time, so share the information early.
Eat a light meal beforehand unless instructed otherwise, and wear comfortable clothing. If sedation is planned, arrange for an adult to drive you home and stay with you. Even with local anaesthetic only, some people prefer to have a companion for the trip back. Stock soft foods and pain relief at home ahead of time.
The extraction
A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible and in one piece. The dentist loosens it gently and lifts it out. A surgical extraction may be needed for a broken, curved or partially hidden tooth, which can involve a small incision in the gum or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches are sometimes placed afterwards.
Once numb, you should feel pressure and pushing but not sharp pain. Tell the dentist right away if you feel discomfort so more anaesthetic can be given. Sounds and pressure can be unsettling, so let the team know if you need a break. After removal, gauze is placed to help a protective blood clot form.
Healing
Bite on gauze as instructed and rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid spitting, rinsing vigorously, drinking through a straw and smoking, all of which can dislodge the clot and lead to a painful dry socket. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Swelling and tenderness usually peak within a couple of days before easing.
A missing tooth can allow neighbouring teeth to tip and opposing teeth to drift. Once healing is underway, discuss whether replacing the tooth with an implant, bridge or partial denture makes sense for you. Not every gap needs filling, especially at the back of the mouth, so ask the dentist about the pros and cons.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to have a problem tooth evaluated. If extraction is recommended, the team will explain the preparation and recovery and schedule a time that allows rest afterwards.
Call promptly if bleeding does not slow with pressure, swelling worsens after a few days or a fever develops after the extraction.

The gum usually closes over within a few weeks, though the bone beneath continues to remodel for months. Most discomfort eases in the first several days. Follow aftercare instructions closely to support healing and reduce the risk of complications.
A dry socket happens when the blood clot is lost or dissolves too early, exposing bone. It typically causes increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if pain worsens instead of improving, as it can be treated to ease discomfort.
With local anaesthetic only, many people can drive. If you receive any form of sedation, you will need someone else to drive you and stay with you. Ask the dentist what is planned so you can make appropriate travel arrangements.
That depends on its location, your bite and your preferences. Front teeth are usually replaced for appearance, while some back teeth may not need it. The dentist will discuss how the gap may affect neighbouring teeth over time.
Light oozing for the first day is common. Firm pressure with gauze or a damp tea bag usually helps. Bleeding that does not slow after continued pressure, or heavy bleeding, needs a call to the office or urgent medical attention.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Langton patients can learn how the decision is made, what removal involves and how to recover comfortably at home.
A dental bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth using the teeth beside it. Langton patients can compare bridges with other options and their upkeep.
