Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsWhen removal is the right call
Dentists generally try to save natural teeth, but sometimes removal is the most sensible option. Severe decay, a fracture below the gumline, advanced gum disease, crowding or an impacted tooth may all lead to an extraction. Knowing why it is recommended, and what happens afterward, helps you feel more prepared.
Should an extraction be suggested, the procedure would take place at our office in Port Dover, a straightforward trip from Jarvis. Plan for someone to accompany you if sedation is involved, and allow time to rest afterward.

Why remove it
A tooth may be extracted when it is too damaged to restore, when infection cannot be cleared with root canal treatment, when gum disease has destroyed its support, or when it is blocking other teeth. Orthodontic planning and wisdom teeth are other common reasons. The dentist will show you why the tooth cannot reasonably be kept.
Ask whether there are alternatives such as root canal treatment and a crown, and what the outlook would be for each option. Understand what will happen to the space and the neighbouring teeth after removal. If you are uncertain, it is reasonable to request time to think or seek a second opinion.
Before the procedure
Tell the dentist about all medicines, especially blood thinners, bone medications and diabetes treatment, as well as heart conditions, recent surgeries and allergies. Some conditions require coordination with your physician or specific precautions. Do not stop any prescribed medicine unless your doctor or dentist advises you to.
Eat before the appointment unless told otherwise, and stock up on soft foods for the next few days. If sedation will be used, arrange for someone to drive you home from Port Dover to Jarvis and stay with you. Plan lighter activities for the rest of the day.
On the day
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic before the tooth is loosened and removed. Some teeth come out in one piece, while others need to be sectioned. You will feel pressure and movement but should not feel sharp pain. Raise your hand if you are uncomfortable so the dentist can pause and add more freezing.
Gauze is placed over the site and you will be asked to bite down firmly to help a clot form. Stitches may be used in some cases. You will receive written aftercare instructions, including how to manage bleeding, swelling and pain over the next few days.
Healing
Avoid spitting, using straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the period advised, as these can dislodge the clot. Stick to soft foods and chew on the other side. Some swelling and discomfort are normal. Call the office if pain gets worse after a few days, bleeding does not stop or you develop a fever.
Once healing has progressed, you can discuss options for replacing the tooth if needed, such as an implant, bridge or partial denture. Some teeth, like wisdom teeth, usually do not need replacement. The dentist will explain timing and whether bone preservation steps might be recommended.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss a tooth that may need removal. Mention any pain, swelling or recent changes, and whether you take blood thinners.
If sedation is planned, confirm your driver in advance and follow any eating or drinking instructions you are given.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. Some soreness afterward is normal and is usually managed with recommended pain relief.
The gum often feels much better within a week or two, though the bone continues to heal for longer. Follow aftercare instructions closely to support recovery.
It occurs when the blood clot is lost from the socket, exposing bone and causing increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if pain worsens rather than improves.
It depends on the tooth’s position and role. Missing back teeth can affect chewing and alignment. The dentist will discuss whether replacement is advisable and which options suit you.
Many people can, depending on the complexity of the extraction and their job. Avoid strenuous activity for the first day or two. Ask the dentist for guidance based on your procedure.
Not all wisdom teeth need removal, but impacted or problem teeth may. Jarvis patients can learn how the decision is made, how to prepare and what recovery involves.
A fixed bridge can fill the gap left by a missing tooth. Jarvis patients can learn at our Port Dover office how bridges compare with implants and what upkeep is involved.
