Dentists generally try to save natural teeth, but sometimes extraction is the healthiest choice. A tooth may be too broken or decayed to repair, severely affected by gum disease, crowded or causing repeated infection. Before recommending removal, the dentist should explain why other options are unlikely to succeed and what replacing the tooth might involve.
If you are coming from Hagersville, our Port Dover office can assess the tooth and discuss the extraction. Planning ahead includes arranging a comfortable trip home and having soft foods ready for the first days of recovery.

Why remove it?
Extensive decay that reaches deep below the gum, a crack extending down the root, or a tooth that has lost most of its bone support may not be restorable. Repeated infections despite treatment can also lead to removal. The dentist will explain the findings and the outlook for alternatives such as root canal treatment or a crown.
Teeth are sometimes removed to make space for orthodontic treatment, because they are impacted, or before radiation therapy and other medical treatment. Baby teeth that are not falling out on schedule may also be taken out. Ask the dentist to outline why the extraction is suggested and whether it is urgent.
Before the procedure
Share your full medical history, including heart conditions, diabetes, bleeding disorders and any history of bisphosphonate or similar bone medications. Bring a list of medications, especially blood thinners. Do not stop prescribed medicines without guidance from your physician. X-rays help the dentist see root shape and nearby structures.
Before the tooth is removed, it is worth discussing whether it needs replacing and how. Options may include an implant, bridge or partial denture, or leaving the space if it causes no problems. Some replacements are easier to plan if decided before the extraction, such as preserving bone in the socket.
On the day
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. The dentist loosens and removes the tooth. A surgical approach may be needed for teeth that are broken or have curved roots. Tell the team immediately if you feel pain so more anaesthetic can be given.
After removal, you will bite on gauze to help a clot form. The dentist gives written aftercare instructions. Plan for someone to drive you back to Hagersville if sedation was used. Even without sedation, it can be easier to have a companion so you can rest during the journey home.
Healing well
For the first day, avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, drinking through a straw and smoking, all of which can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Swelling and soreness are common and usually peak within a couple of days. Follow the dentist’s advice on pain relief and gentle rinsing.
Call the office if bleeding does not slow with firm gauze pressure, pain increases sharply after a few days, a bad taste develops or you get a fever. These can signal dry socket or infection. Swelling that spreads, or any difficulty breathing or swallowing, needs immediate emergency medical care.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss the tooth and book an assessment. Let the team know about pain, swelling or medical conditions so the visit can be planned safely.
Bring a full medication list, stock up on soft foods at home and consider having someone drive you back after the appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain during removal. Some soreness afterwards is normal and usually manageable with recommended pain relief. Let the team know straight away if you feel sharp pain during the procedure.
The gum usually closes over within a few weeks, while the bone underneath continues to remodel for several months. Most discomfort eases in the first several days. Healing time varies with the tooth, the procedure and your general health.
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket is lost or does not form, exposing bone. It typically causes increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if you suspect it, as the dentist can treat it.
Not always, but missing teeth can affect chewing, appearance and the position of neighbouring teeth. The dentist can explain whether replacement is recommended in your situation and compare implants, bridges and dentures.
Many people return to normal activities within a day or two after a simple extraction. Strenuous exercise may need to wait a little longer. More complex extractions can need extra recovery time. Ask the dentist for advice specific to your case.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removal. Hagersville patients can learn when extraction is advised, what the procedure involves and how to plan for recovery.
A bridge can fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Hagersville patients can compare bridge types, preparation and cleaning needs in Port Dover.
