Dentists generally try to save natural teeth, but sometimes removal is the healthiest option. Severe decay, advanced gum disease, a fracture below the gumline, crowding or a tooth that keeps causing infection may lead to an extraction recommendation. Understanding the reasons helps you feel confident in the decision.
If you are from Cultus and have been told a tooth may need to come out, our Port Dover team can assess it and talk through alternatives. We will explain the procedure, what to expect during healing and how you might replace the tooth afterward if that is appropriate.

Why remove a tooth
Teeth with extensive decay that cannot be restored, cracks extending into the root, severe bone loss from gum disease or repeated infections may be recommended for removal. Extractions are also sometimes part of orthodontic planning or done to make room for dentures. The dentist will show you the findings that support the recommendation. Ask to see the X-ray if it helps.
Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or periodontal care could save the tooth, and what the outlook would be for each. Sometimes saving a tooth is possible but carries a higher risk of future problems. Weighing these factors with the dentist helps you choose what fits your health and priorities. A second opinion is always reasonable.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bisphosphonates and supplements, and any medical conditions such as diabetes or heart problems. Some situations require coordination with your physician. Do not stop prescribed medications on your own; ask the dentist and your doctor for guidance first. Recent hospital stays or new prescriptions are worth mentioning too.
Eat a light meal beforehand unless instructed otherwise, and plan to rest afterward. If sedation is used, arrange for someone to drive you home, since you will not be able to drive yourself. Stock up on soft foods and any recommended pain relief before your appointment day. Having supplies at home saves an extra errand afterward.
The procedure
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. The dentist gently loosens the tooth and removes it, and you may feel pressure or pushing. Let the dentist know if you feel pain so more anaesthetic can be given. Gauze is placed over the site to help a blood clot form. Many extractions take less time than people expect.
Some teeth come out in one piece, while others, such as broken or impacted teeth, require a surgical approach involving a small incision or sectioning the tooth. Stitches may be placed. The dentist will explain which type of extraction is expected and whether a referral to an oral surgeon is recommended. Dissolving stitches usually need no removal visit.
Healing
Bite on gauze as directed, avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, smoking or drinking through a straw for the first day or so, as these can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Some swelling and tenderness is normal. Call if bleeding persists, pain increases after a few days or fever develops.
Once healing is underway, consider whether to replace the tooth. Options may include an implant, a bridge or a partial denture, depending on the location and your goals. Some teeth, such as wisdom teeth, usually do not need replacement. The dentist can explain the timing and choices, and how long the gum should heal before replacement begins.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of the tooth. If removal is recommended, ask about appointment length and any preparation so you can plan transport home safely.
Bring a full medication list and contact details for your physician if you have medical conditions that may need coordination before treatment.
Before you book

The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than sharp pain during the procedure. Some soreness afterward is common and can usually be managed with recommended pain relief, cold compresses and plenty of rest.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost or does not form properly, exposing bone. It can cause increasing pain a few days after extraction. Contact the office if this happens; it can be treated.
Initial healing of the gum often takes a week or two, while the bone continues to remodel for longer. Recovery varies with the tooth, the procedure and your overall health. Smoking can slow it noticeably.
Not always, but replacing a missing tooth can help prevent shifting and support chewing. The dentist will discuss whether replacement is advisable and which options suit your situation. Wisdom teeth usually are not replaced at all.
Many people return to light activities the next day. After a more involved extraction or sedation, more rest may be needed. Ask the dentist what to expect for your specific procedure before booking time off.
Wisdom teeth do not always need removal. Cultus patients can learn when extraction is advised, what the procedure involves and how to recover at home.
A dental bridge fills a gap using neighbouring teeth for support. Cultus patients can compare bridges with implants and learn how to care for one.
