Regular care, fewer surprises

A checkup is your best chance to find problems while they are small.

Many dental problems develop quietly. Early cavities, gum inflammation, cracked fillings and some oral lesions can be present without any pain at all. A routine examination lets the dentist look closely at your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, compare findings with past visits and recommend care before small issues grow into emergencies or more involved treatment.

Windham Centre households can schedule regular exams at our Port Dover office, often combined with a hygiene cleaning to make the most of each trip into town. Bring along your questions, and the dentist will explain what they see, what looks healthy and what, if anything, needs attention now or later.

Before you come

A few minutes of preparation makes the visit more productive.

  1. Update your health information

Bring an up-to-date list of medications, supplements and allergies, and mention any new diagnoses or surgeries since your last visit. Some health conditions and medicines affect the mouth or change how dental treatment should be provided. If your insurance details have changed, have the new information ready so the team can update your file without delaying the appointment.

  2. Note any changes you have noticed

Think about any sensitivity, bleeding when brushing, jaw discomfort, dry mouth or changes in the way your teeth meet. Note any sore that has lasted longer than two weeks. Even small observations help the dentist focus the exam where it matters. Jot down questions about cosmetic concerns or treatment you have been considering, so you remember to ask before you leave.

The examination

The exam covers more than counting cavities.

Teeth and restorations

The dentist checks each tooth for decay, cracks and wear, and examines existing fillings, crowns and other work for damage or leaking edges. X-rays may be recommended at intervals based on your individual risk, to see between teeth and below the gumline. The dentist will explain why any images are suggested and what they are expected to show before they are taken.

Gums, soft tissues and jaw

Gums are assessed for inflammation, recession and pocket depth. The tongue, cheeks, palate, throat and lips are examined for unusual changes as part of an oral cancer screening. The dentist may also check your jaw joints and the way your bite comes together. Findings are compared with earlier records so that slow changes over months or years can be spotted.

Discussing results

You should leave knowing where your oral health stands.

Understanding what was found

The dentist will explain the findings in plain language, show X-rays or photos where helpful and answer your questions. If everything looks healthy, they will tell you so and suggest when to return. If problems are found, ask how urgent each one is, what the options are and what is likely to happen if treatment is delayed for a while.

Prioritising any treatment

When treatment is recommended, the dentist can outline the options, the number of visits involved and the expected costs. Ask for a written plan if you would like to review it at home or check your insurance coverage. Treatment can often be scheduled in stages that fit your budget and timetable, starting with the most important needs first.

Ongoing prevention

What you do at home shapes your next checkup.

  • Daily habits that matter

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth every day and limit how often you have sugary snacks and drinks. If you use tobacco, consider quitting, as it affects gum health and raises oral cancer risk. Ask the hygienist for tips if certain areas are hard to reach or if your current tools are not doing the job well.

  • Choosing a recall interval

Recall intervals vary. Some people do well with visits every six months, while others benefit from more frequent care because of gum disease, cavity risk or health conditions. The dentist will recommend an interval based on what they see rather than a fixed rule. Booking your next appointment before you leave makes it easier to stay on track.

Planning your appointment

Keep your checkups on the calendar.

Call our Port Dover office to book a routine exam. Let the team know roughly when your last checkup was and whether you would like a cleaning scheduled at the same visit to save a second trip.

If several family members from Windham Centre need appointments, ask whether they can be grouped together on the same day.

Checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have a dental exam?

Many people visit every six months, but the right interval depends on your oral health, risk factors and medical history. After assessing you, the dentist will recommend a schedule that suits your needs and may adjust it over time.

Do I need X-rays at every checkup?

Not necessarily. How often X-rays are taken depends on your age, risk of decay and gum disease, and any symptoms you have. The dentist will explain when images are recommended and why they would be useful in your case.

What is included in an oral cancer screening?

The dentist examines your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, palate and throat for unusual patches, lumps or sores. Screening is quick and painless. Between visits, report any sore that does not heal within about two weeks.

Can I have my cleaning at the same visit?

Often, yes. Many patients schedule their exam and cleaning together. Ask the team when booking so both can be arranged for a single trip to the office, which is especially convenient if you are travelling in from a rural area.

What if I have not had a checkup in years?

You are welcome to book. The dentist will take a thorough look, possibly with X-rays, and help you understand where things stand. If treatment is needed, it can be planned at a comfortable pace without any judgment about the gap.
