Routine care, real value

A checkup is the simplest way to find problems while they are still small.

Many dental problems develop quietly. A cavity between teeth, early gum disease or a cracked filling may cause no discomfort until it is advanced. A regular exam lets the dentist look for these issues, check soft tissues for unusual changes and review how your bite and existing dental work are holding up.

People living in Renton visit our Port Dover office for routine checkups. Because each trip takes planning, it can help to pair the exam with a cleaning when possible and to raise any questions about teeth, gums or dental work during the same appointment rather than saving them for later.

What is examined

The dentist looks at more than just the teeth.

Teeth and dental work

Each tooth is checked for decay, wear and cracks. Fillings, crowns, bridges and other dental work are examined for leaks, chips or loose edges. The dentist also looks at how your teeth meet, since changes in your bite or signs of grinding can point to problems that are easier to manage when caught early on.

Gums and soft tissues

Gums are assessed for bleeding, swelling and recession, and pocket depths may be measured to check for gum disease. The tongue, cheeks, palate and floor of the mouth are examined for lumps, patches or sores. The dentist may feel the jaw joints and neck for tenderness or swelling as part of the routine exam. It takes little time.

X-rays and records

Images show what cannot be seen by eye.

When X-rays are taken

X-rays are not taken at every visit. The dentist recommends them based on your age, risk of decay, gum health and history. They can reveal cavities between teeth, bone loss, problems at root tips and the condition of hidden parts of fillings and crowns. You can ask why particular images are suggested for you at any visit.

Keeping a baseline

Over time, records from your exams create a baseline that helps the dentist spot changes. Bringing records or X-rays from a previous dentist can be useful, especially if you are new to the practice. Tell the team about any recent dental work done elsewhere so it can be considered at your exam and in planning.

Talking it over

The end of the exam is a chance to ask questions.

  • Explaining findings

The dentist will explain what was found, which issues need treatment, which can be watched and which are healthy. If treatment is recommended, ask about the reasons, urgency and options. You do not have to decide on everything immediately; take time to consider if needed. The team can note your questions so they are answered at the next contact.

  • Raising your own concerns

Mention any symptoms you have noticed, such as sensitivity, bleeding when brushing, dry mouth, jaw clicking or changes in breath. Share updates to your medical history and medications. These details help the dentist give advice that fits your circumstances rather than general guidance. Even small changes, such as a new prescription or a recent illness, are worth mentioning.

Between visits

What you do at home matters as much as the checkup itself.

  1. Daily habits

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. If you use tobacco, consider talking with the dentist or your doctor about quitting. Wear a mouthguard for sports and a night guard if recommended. These habits reduce the chance of problems between exams considerably. Consistency matters most.

  2. Choosing a recall interval

The dentist will suggest how often you should return, based on your risk and oral health. Some people come more frequently, others less. Booking the next exam before leaving can make it easier to plan around seasonal work, school schedules and the trip from Renton. A reminder before the date helps too, especially in busy seasons.

Checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have a dental checkup?

It depends on your oral health and risk factors. Many people are seen at regular intervals, while others need more frequent visits. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on your exam findings and history.

Is a checkup the same as a cleaning?

Not exactly. A checkup is an examination by the dentist, while a cleaning is usually done by a hygienist. They are often booked together, but they are separate parts of preventive care that work together.

Do I need X-rays every time?

No. X-rays are recommended based on individual needs, such as risk of decay or gum disease. The dentist will explain when and why images are suggested. If you have recent X-rays from another office, bring or forward them.

What if I have not been to a dentist in years?

That is common and nothing to feel embarrassed about. Book a new patient exam and let the team know. The dentist will assess your current oral health and explain any recommended next steps clearly and calmly.

Will the dentist check for oral cancer?

A routine exam typically includes a look at the soft tissues of the mouth. Tell the dentist about any persistent sores, lumps or patches you have noticed so they can be checked carefully and gently.
