Routine care that pays off

A regular exam is the simplest way to stay ahead of problems.

Many dental conditions develop quietly. Early cavities, gum inflammation and worn fillings often cause no symptoms until they are more advanced. A routine examination gives the dentist a chance to spot these changes, check soft tissues for anything unusual and discuss your home care before small concerns turn into larger, more involved treatment.

Whether you live at Peacock Point all year or come for the summer season, you can schedule checkups at our Port Dover office. If you also see a dentist elsewhere, let the team know so records can be coordinated and duplicate X-rays avoided.

Before the visit

Come prepared with your current health details.

  • Update your health information

Bring an up-to-date list of medications, including supplements, and mention any new medical diagnoses, surgeries or allergies. Some conditions and medicines affect the mouth or influence how dental care is planned. If you have a heart condition, joint replacement or other condition where special precautions may apply, tell the team when you book.

  • Note any changes you have noticed

Think about anything different since your last checkup, such as bleeding gums, sensitivity, a rough tooth, a sore spot or changes in your bite. Even small observations can help the dentist focus the exam. Note whether you have been grinding or clenching, and mention any cosmetic concerns you would like to discuss while you are there.

The exam

The dentist looks at your whole mouth.

Teeth, fillings and bite

Each tooth is checked for decay, cracks and wear, and existing fillings, crowns and bridges are inspected. The dentist observes how your teeth meet and whether there are signs of grinding. X-rays may be recommended depending on your history and risk, to look for problems between teeth and below the gums that cannot be seen directly.

Gums, tissues and screening

Gum health is assessed by checking for bleeding, pockets and recession. The tongue, cheeks, palate, throat and lips are examined for any unusual changes, as part of routine oral cancer screening. The jaw joints and lymph nodes in the neck may also be checked. Ask the dentist to explain anything noted.

Discussion

Leave with a clear picture of your oral health.

Review what was found

The dentist should explain the results in plain language, including what looks healthy and what needs attention. Ask to see X-rays or photos if it helps you understand. If something should be monitored rather than treated now, find out what changes to watch for and when it will be reviewed again.

Plan any next steps

If treatment is recommended, ask about the reasons, urgency and options. Some issues can wait, while others are better addressed promptly. Discuss timing, particularly if you will be away for part of the year, so treatment is not started and then interrupted for months before it can be completed.

Next visit

Plan your next checkup before you leave.

  1. Set your recall interval

The dentist will recommend how often to return based on your oral health, risk of cavities and gum condition. Some people need more frequent visits, while others can be seen less often. Book your next appointment before leaving if possible, keeping your seasonal plans in mind so the interval does not stretch too long.

  2. Keep up home care

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Follow any specific advice from the exam, such as using a softer brush or a particular cleaning aid. Contact the office between visits if you notice pain, swelling or a change that concerns you.

Checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have a dental exam?

The interval depends on your oral health, risk factors and history. Many people are seen regularly, but some need more frequent visits. The dentist will recommend timing that suits your individual needs.

Do I need X-rays every time?

Not necessarily. X-rays are recommended based on your history, risk and specific concerns. The dentist will explain why images are suggested and how often they are likely to be needed for you.

Can my exam and cleaning be on the same day?

Often, yes. Ask when booking whether the exam and hygiene appointment can be coordinated. This can be convenient, especially if you are travelling from Peacock Point for the visit.

What happens if a problem is found?

The dentist will explain the finding and discuss options, which may include monitoring, preventive measures or treatment. You can ask questions and decide on next steps with a clear understanding of the situation.

I see another dentist in winter. Can records be shared?

With your consent, records and X-rays can usually be shared between offices. This helps both dentists understand your history and avoid repeating tests unnecessarily. Mention it when booking.
