Routine care, careful attention

Regular exams catch problems while they are still small.

Many dental problems, including early decay, gum disease and worn or leaking fillings, develop quietly long before they cause pain. A regular checkup gives the dentist a chance to find these issues early, when treatment is usually simpler, quicker and less costly. It also gives you time to raise any changes you have noticed and to review how your home care is working.

Hillcrest residents can book routine exams at our Port Dover office. Each visit covers your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of the mouth, and you will leave with a clear explanation of what was found, what, if anything, needs attention and when you should return.

Before the visit

A few minutes of preparation makes the exam more useful.

  1. Updating your health information

Bring an updated list of medications and let the team know about any changes in your health since your last visit, such as new diagnoses, surgeries or a pregnancy. Some conditions and medications affect the mouth or influence how dental treatment should be provided. Accurate information helps the dentist interpret what they see and give advice that is safe for you.

  2. Noting any concerns

Make a note of any sensitivity, bleeding gums, sore spots, changes in how your teeth fit together or cosmetic concerns you would like to discuss. Even small issues are worth mentioning, since they can point to something the dentist should look at more closely. If you have questions about a particular tooth or treatment, write them down so you remember to ask.

The examination

The exam covers more than counting cavities.

  • Teeth and restorations

The dentist examines each tooth for decay, cracks and wear, and checks existing fillings, crowns and bridges for leaks, chips or other damage. Your bite and jaw movement may also be assessed, particularly if you mention clicking or soreness. X-rays may be recommended based on your history and risk, with the reasons explained to you before any images are taken.

  • Gums and soft tissues

The gums are checked for inflammation, bleeding and the depth of the small pockets around each tooth, which can reveal early gum disease. The dentist also looks carefully at the tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth and throat for any unusual patches or lumps. This screening is a routine part of every exam and helps detect concerns at an early stage.

Discussing results

You should leave understanding your oral health.

Explaining what was found

After the exam, the dentist explains their findings in plain language. If something needs attention, ask what it is, why it matters and what is likely to happen if it is left alone for now. You are welcome to ask for photos or to look at your X-rays on screen. A clear explanation helps you make informed decisions about your own care.

Prioritizing any treatment

If treatment is recommended, ask which items are urgent and which can safely be scheduled later. The dentist can help you prioritize based on risk, symptoms and your personal circumstances, including budget and timing. You can also request a written plan or estimate to review at home before booking any further appointments or making a decision.

Between visits

What you do at home shapes the next exam.

Home care that makes a difference

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth each day and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Ask the team for advice on technique or tools that suit your mouth, such as interdental brushes or a water flosser if regular floss is difficult. Small, consistent improvements in daily care often make a noticeable difference by the next visit.

Choosing a checkup interval

The right interval between checkups varies from person to person. People with healthy mouths and low risk may need less frequent visits, while those with gum disease or a tendency toward decay may benefit from more regular care. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on your actual needs rather than applying a fixed rule to everyone.

Planning your appointment

Booking a checkup with a Hillcrest address.

Contact our Port Dover office to schedule a routine exam. If you would like a cleaning at the same appointment, mention it when booking so the visit can be arranged with enough time for both the hygienist and the dentist.

If several family members are due for checkups, ask whether their appointments can be scheduled back to back to save extra trips.

Checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have a dental checkup?

The interval depends on your oral health and personal risk factors. Some people benefit from more frequent visits, while others can safely go longer between them. The dentist will recommend a schedule tailored to you after reviewing your history and findings.

Do I need X-rays at every checkup?

Not necessarily. X-rays are recommended based on your history, your risk of decay and any specific concerns. The dentist will explain why images would be useful before taking them and roughly how often they are likely to be needed for you.

What if I have no symptoms?

Many dental problems cause no symptoms in their early stages. A checkup can find decay, gum disease or other concerns before they become painful or more complicated to treat. Feeling fine is a good sign, but it does not replace an examination.

Is the exam the same as a cleaning?

No. The exam is carried out by the dentist to assess your overall oral health, while a cleaning removes plaque and tartar from your teeth. The two are often scheduled together but are separate parts of preventive care with different purposes.

Can I ask about cosmetic concerns at a checkup?

Yes. Mention any cosmetic questions and the dentist can discuss them briefly during the visit. If more time is needed to explore options properly, they may suggest booking a separate consultation focused on your goals for your smile.
