Routine care, real value

A regular checkup is your best chance to keep small problems small.

Many dental problems, including early decay and gum disease, develop quietly without pain. A routine examination lets the dentist look for these changes, check existing fillings and crowns and review the soft tissues of the mouth. Regular visits build a record that makes it easier to notice when something changes.

For people living in a rural spot like Cultus, combining an exam with a cleaning on one trip to our Port Dover office can be convenient. Let us know what you would like covered, and we will explain what the visit includes and how often you should return.

Before you arrive

A few minutes of preparation makes the visit more useful.

  • Update your health history

Medications, new diagnoses, pregnancy and recent surgeries can all affect dental care. Bring an updated list of medications and let the team know about any changes since your last visit. Some conditions and medicines influence gum health, healing or which treatments are appropriate, so accurate information matters. Supplements and over-the-counter products count too, so include them.

  • Note any concerns

Write down anything you have noticed, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums, a rough edge or jaw discomfort. Small symptoms are easy to forget once you are in the chair. Mentioning them early helps the dentist focus the examination and answer the questions most important to you during the appointment. A note on your phone works well for this.

During the exam

The dentist looks at much more than individual teeth.

Teeth, gums and restorations

Each tooth is checked for signs of decay, cracks and wear. Fillings, crowns and bridges are examined for leaks or damage. The gums are assessed for bleeding, recession and pocket depth, which can indicate gum disease. X-rays may be recommended at intervals to look between teeth and below the gumline. The interval depends on your history.

Soft tissues and bite

The dentist also examines the tongue, cheeks, palate and throat for unusual patches or lumps as part of an oral cancer screening. They look at how your teeth meet, check for signs of grinding and may ask about jaw comfort. These observations give a broad picture of your oral health. Changes from one visit to the next are often the most telling.

Understanding findings

Leave knowing what needs attention and what can wait.

Explaining what was found

If the dentist finds something, ask them to show you on an X-ray, photo or mirror. Understanding what a cavity or gum pocket looks like makes it easier to follow the explanation. Ask whether the finding needs treatment now, can be monitored or might benefit from changes in home care. Not every finding needs treatment right away.

Prioritizing any treatment

When several issues are identified, ask the dentist to help you prioritize. Some problems are more urgent than others. Knowing the order of care allows you to plan appointments and budgets sensibly. You can always request time to think or seek a second opinion before agreeing to treatment. A written summary can help you compare options at home.

Between visits

What you do at home shapes your next exam.

  1. Daily habits that support your checkups

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. If you have trouble with any part of your routine, ask the hygienist for tips. Small improvements in technique often have a noticeable effect on gum health by the next appointment. Less bleeding is often the first sign of progress.

  2. Choosing the right interval

Not everyone needs the same checkup schedule. People with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities or certain health conditions may benefit from more frequent visits. Ask the dentist what interval suits you, and consider booking your next appointment before you leave to help keep it on your calendar. You can always move it later if plans change.

Planning your appointment

Checkups for Cultus patients

Call our Port Dover office to book a routine exam. If you would like a cleaning on the same visit, mention it so the team can arrange enough time for both.

Bring an updated medication list and note any symptoms you have noticed. If you are new to the practice, ask about sending previous records ahead.

Checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have a dental exam?

Many people benefit from regular checkups, but the right interval depends on your oral health, history and risk factors. The dentist will recommend a schedule that suits you after reviewing your mouth, and may adjust it over time.

Will I need X-rays at every checkup?

Not usually. X-rays are recommended based on individual need, such as risk of decay or monitoring a known problem. Ask why images are suggested and how often you are likely to need them given your history.

Is a cleaning part of the exam?

Many checkup visits include a cleaning with the hygienist, but the exam and cleaning are separate services. Ask when booking what your appointment will include, so you know how much time to set aside for the trip.

What if I have not been to the dentist in years?

That is fine. Let the team know when you book. The first visit may take longer to establish a full picture of your oral health and talk about any needs that have developed, without judgment.

Can I ask questions about cosmetic options at a checkup?

Yes. Mention any interest in whitening or other changes. The dentist can give an initial impression and suggest whether a separate consultation would be helpful for a detailed discussion of options, costs and timing for you.
