Routine care, real value

A regular exam helps keep small problems small.

A dental checkup is more than a quick look at your teeth. The dentist examines teeth, gums, bite, jaw joints and the soft tissues of the mouth, then compares what they see with earlier visits. Many problems, from early decay to gum inflammation and unusual patches, cause no symptoms at first, so a routine exam can find them before they hurt.

Bloomsburg residents can schedule exams for themselves and their families at our Port Dover office. The dentist explains what was found in plain terms, answers questions and helps you plan any follow-up care at a pace that fits your schedule, budget conversations and priorities, rather than handing over a list without context.

What is checked

The exam looks at the whole mouth, not just the teeth.

Teeth, fillings and the bite

Each tooth is checked for decay, cracks and wear, and existing fillings or crowns are examined for gaps, chips or leaking edges. The dentist looks at how your teeth come together and whether there are signs of grinding or clenching. Changes since your last visit are noted, so slow trends such as gradual wear or recession can be tracked over the years.

Gums and soft tissues

The gums are checked for bleeding, recession and pocket depth, which together show how healthy the supporting tissues are. The tongue, cheeks, palate, floor of the mouth and throat are examined for unusual spots, lumps or colour changes. This screening helps catch concerns early and gives a baseline that future exams can be compared against.

Imaging

Imaging is suggested based on your individual needs.

When X-rays are recommended

The dentist recommends X-rays according to your age, decay risk, gum health and dental history, so not every visit requires them. If you have had images taken elsewhere recently, mention it so they can be requested rather than repeated. You are always welcome to ask why imaging is being suggested and how the information will be used in your care.

What they reveal

X-rays can show decay between teeth, problems hidden under fillings, bone levels around the roots and changes at the root tips that cannot be seen by eye. The dentist explains any findings and, where earlier images are available, compares them to see whether something is new, stable or progressing. Seeing the images yourself often makes the explanation clearer.

Your results

You should leave knowing what was found and what it means.

Understanding the findings

The dentist will tell you whether your teeth and gums look healthy and point out any areas of concern. Ask questions if anything is unclear, and request to see photos or X-rays if that would help. It is also reasonable to ask what might happen if a recommended treatment were postponed, so you can weigh urgency against other commitments.

Prioritizing any treatment

If treatment is needed, the dentist can help you sort which issues are most pressing and which can be scheduled later. A written plan makes it easier to arrange time off and to check coverage directly with your insurer. Preventive measures such as fluoride or a change in cleaning routine may also be suggested to lower the chance of future problems.

Keeping up

Home care and regular visits work together.

  • Daily habits that matter

Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth and limiting frequent sugary snacks or sipped drinks help protect your teeth between appointments. If you have particular concerns such as sensitivity or a dry mouth, ask for advice tailored to them. Call about new symptoms when they appear rather than waiting for the next scheduled checkup.

  • Scheduling your next exam

The dentist will suggest a checkup interval based on your oral health. Some people benefit from more frequent visits, while others can safely go longer between them. Booking your next appointment before you leave, ideally alongside other family members, helps keep the routine going and makes planning each trip over from Bloomsburg a little simpler.

Planning your appointment

Fitting a checkup into your schedule.

Call our Port Dover office to arrange an exam. Mention when your last checkup was, whether you are new to the practice and any current concerns, so the appointment can be booked with enough time.

Family members can sometimes be booked on the same day or back to back; ask about the options when you call.

Checkup questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have a dental exam?

It depends on your oral health, history and risk factors. The dentist will recommend a schedule after examining you. Some people benefit from more frequent visits than others, and the interval can change as your needs change.

Is a cleaning part of the checkup?

Exams and hygiene cleanings are often scheduled together, though not always. Ask when booking what your appointment will include so you know how much time to set aside and can plan the rest of your day.

Do I need X-rays every time?

No. X-rays are recommended based on your individual needs and dental history. The dentist will explain when imaging is useful, which type is suggested and why, and you are welcome to ask questions before it is taken.

What if I have not seen a dentist in years?

That is fine and more common than you might think. Let the team know when you book. The first exam may take a little longer, and the dentist will help you understand your current needs without any judgment.

Do you check for oral cancer during the exam?

Examining the soft tissues of the mouth for unusual changes is part of a thorough exam. Mention any sores, lumps or patches you have noticed, particularly ones that have lasted more than a couple of weeks, so they can be looked at closely.
