A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment and needs reinforcement. Crowns can also improve the shape or colour of a tooth, though protecting function is usually the main reason they are suggested.
Wilsonville patients who have been advised to get a crown can arrange the process at our Port Dover office. Most crowns involve at least two visits, so ask the team about scheduling. The dentist will explain why a crown is recommended for that tooth and whether a smaller restoration might work instead.

Why a crown
When a tooth has lost a large portion of its structure, the remaining walls can flex and crack under chewing forces. A crown holds the tooth together and distributes those forces more evenly. Teeth that have had root canal treatment, especially back teeth, are often crowned because they can become more brittle.
If enough healthy tooth remains, an onlay or a large filling might be considered instead. These preserve more natural structure but may not suit every situation. Your dentist will explain the reasons for recommending a crown and whether a more conservative option is realistic for your tooth.
Materials
Ceramic crowns can closely match the colour of surrounding teeth and are commonly used where appearance matters. Some modern ceramics are also quite strong. Your dentist will consider where the tooth is, how heavily you bite and whether you grind before suggesting a ceramic material.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and require less tooth reduction, making them useful for back teeth under heavy forces, though they are visible. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask the dentist about the trade-offs of each material for your situation.
The process
After numbing the area, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. A core build-up may be placed if much tooth is missing. Impressions or scans are taken, and a shade is chosen. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, contacts with neighbouring teeth and your bite, then cements or bonds the crown in place. Tell the dentist if the bite feels high or the crown feels tight against nearby teeth.
Aftercare
Temporary crowns are held with weaker cement. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side and slide floss out sideways rather than pulling up. If the temporary comes off, call the office; keep it and avoid chewing on the bare tooth. Some sensitivity is normal while the temporary is in place.
Brush twice daily and clean between teeth, paying attention to where the crown meets the gum, since decay can start at the edge. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard. Regular checkups allow the crown and the gum around it to be monitored.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to schedule your crown appointments. Ask how far apart the preparation and fitting visits usually are so you can plan travel and time away from work.
Let the team know about any grinding, jaw discomfort or previous problems with crowns so the material and design can account for them.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Crowns often last many years, depending on the material, your bite, oral hygiene and habits like grinding. Regular checkups help identify wear or problems at the edges before they become serious.
Local anaesthetic keeps the tooth comfortable during preparation. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and usually settles within days. Contact the office if discomfort persists.
Yes, the natural tooth under the crown can decay, especially along the edge near the gum. Brushing, flossing and regular checkups help protect it.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with nearby teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown is made, since crowns do not change colour with whitening.
Call the office promptly. A loose crown can allow bacteria underneath. Avoid chewing on it, and if it comes off, keep it safe and bring it to your appointment.
Inlays and onlays repair back teeth that need more than a filling but less than a crown. Wilsonville patients can compare these options at our Port Dover office.
Did a filling or crown come out? Wilsonville patients can see how the dentist looks for the cause, checks the tooth left behind and chooses the right repair.
