Strength for weakened teeth

A crown covers and protects a tooth that needs support.

A crown is a custom cap that fits over the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a very large filling, a crack, extensive decay or root canal treatment, or when its shape or colour needs significant change. By covering the tooth, a crown helps hold it together and spreads chewing forces more evenly.

For Walsh patients, crowns are planned and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is suggested for that particular tooth, what alternatives exist, which materials are suitable and how many appointments the process is likely to take from start to finish.

Why a crown

The recommendation depends on how much tooth remains.

When a filling is no longer enough

When more of the tooth is filling than natural structure, the remaining walls can crack under biting pressure, sometimes below the gumline where repair becomes difficult. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often more brittle and may benefit from full coverage. A crown can also restore a broken tooth or one that is badly worn down from years of grinding.

Considering alternatives

Depending on the situation, an onlay may protect a weakened tooth while preserving more of its natural structure. Sometimes a large filling is a reasonable choice for a while, with the tooth monitored. Ask the dentist to explain the risks and benefits of each choice so you understand clearly why a crown is the preferred option for this tooth now.

Materials

Material choice balances strength and appearance.

All-ceramic and zirconia crowns

All-ceramic and zirconia crowns offer tooth-coloured results and are widely used for both front and back teeth. Some are more translucent and natural looking, while others prioritize strength for heavy chewing. The dentist will consider your bite, any grinding habit and how visible the tooth is when you smile before suggesting a particular material for you.

Metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns

Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and, in some cases, require less tooth removal, though they are clearly visible. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Discuss which factors matter most to you, such as appearance, longevity and cost, so the recommendation reflects your own priorities as well as clinical ones.

The process

Two appointments are typical for most crowns.

  1. Preparation and impressions

The tooth is frozen, decay or old filling material is removed and the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown. A build-up may be added if much structure is missing, giving the crown something solid to hold onto. Impressions or digital scans capture the shape precisely, and a shade is selected to match the neighbouring teeth.

  2. Temporary crown and final fit

A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made at a lab. Treat it gently and avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side. At the second visit the dentist checks fit, contacts and bite before cementing the final crown. Mention any scheduling needs for travel from Walsh so the two visits can be planned sensibly.

Aftercare

Crowned teeth still need everyday care.

  • Settling in after placement

Some sensitivity or gum tenderness is common for a few days after the final crown is placed. If your bite feels high, the crown feels loose or pain grows rather than fading, contact the office. A high bite left unadjusted can make the tooth sore and bruised over time, so it is always worth having it checked promptly.

  • Helping your crown last

The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can, particularly where the crown meets the gumline. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular checkups so the edges can be examined. If you grind, ask about a night guard to protect both the crown and your other teeth from heavy wear while you sleep.

Planning your appointment

Planning crown treatment from Walsh

Contact our Port Dover office to book an assessment or to discuss a crown another dentist has recommended. Let us know if the tooth is painful or broken so the urgency can be considered when booking.

Bring previous X-rays or treatment plans if available, and ask how many visits will be needed to complete the crown.

Crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually short-lived. Contact the office if discomfort persists for more than a couple of weeks or worsens.

How long will a crown last?

Many crowns last for years, depending on the material, bite forces, grinding and home care. Regular exams allow the dentist to check the margins where the crown meets the tooth and catch problems early, while they are simpler to fix.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth often benefit from a crown after root canal treatment because they can become brittle and prone to fracture. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling instead. The dentist will advise based on the particular tooth.

What if my temporary crown falls off?

Keep it, call the office and avoid chewing on that side. A temporary adhesive from the pharmacy may hold it briefly until you can be seen. The team can recement it to protect the prepared tooth from sensitivity and shifting.

Can a crown match my other teeth?

Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with neighbouring teeth under normal light. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do so beforehand, since crowns do not change colour with whitening and would otherwise look darker afterwards.
