Strength for a weakened tooth

A crown wraps a damaged tooth so it can keep working.

A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, a broken cusp or has had root canal treatment, because these teeth can be fragile. By holding the tooth together and restoring its shape, a crown can help it withstand everyday chewing.

If a crown has been suggested or you are wondering whether one is needed, patients from Vittoria can have the tooth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is recommended, which materials might suit the tooth and what the appointments involve, so you can plan around the visits.

Why a crown

The reason for the crown shapes every other decision.

Teeth that benefit from coverage

Teeth with extensive decay, large old fillings, cracks or worn surfaces may lack the strength to hold up on their own. After root canal treatment, back teeth in particular can become brittle. A crown can also improve the look of a badly discoloured or misshapen tooth. Ask the dentist to show you on X-rays or photos why coverage is advised for your tooth.

Alternatives to discuss

Depending on how much healthy tooth remains, an onlay or large filling may sometimes be possible instead, preserving more natural structure. In other cases, the tooth may not be restorable at all. Ask about the outlook for each option, including how long it might last and what future treatment it could lead to, so your decision rests on a clear comparison.

Choosing materials

Material choice balances appearance, strength and the position of the tooth.

Tooth-coloured ceramics

All-ceramic and zirconia crowns can be shaded to resemble natural teeth and are often chosen for visible areas. Some ceramics are very strong, while others prioritize translucency. The dentist will consider your bite, any grinding and the amount of space available before recommending a type. Ask about how each option wears against the opposing teeth.

Metal and combination crowns

Gold and other metal crowns are durable and require less tooth removal in some cases, though they are visible. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Each material has trade-offs in appearance, strength and how it affects the gumline. The dentist can explain why one suits your tooth better than another.

Getting the crown

Most crowns involve preparation, a temporary and a fitting.

  1. Preparing the tooth

After numbing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown has room to fit. If too little tooth remains, a core build-up may be placed first. Impressions or a digital scan are taken, along with a shade selection. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is being made, so treat it gently.

  2. Fitting the final crown

At the fitting appointment, the temporary is removed and the new crown is checked for fit, contact with neighbouring teeth, bite and appearance. Adjustments are made if needed before it is cemented or bonded. Your bite will be checked again. It may take a few days to get used to the new shape, which is normal.

Long-term care

A crowned tooth still needs care at the gumline.

  • Daily cleaning

The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth beneath it can, especially at the edge where crown meets tooth. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth carefully. Regular cleanings and checkups help keep the surrounding gum healthy. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may protect both the crown and the opposing teeth.

  • Signs to report

Contact the office if the crown feels loose, if you notice a gap or dark line at the gum, if the tooth becomes painful or sensitive, or if the crown chips. A crown that comes off should be kept safe and brought with you. Do not try to glue it back with household products, as this can damage the tooth.

Dental crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a dental crown last?

Many crowns last for years, but lifespan depends on the material, bite forces, grinding habits and how well the tooth and gum are cared for. The dentist can give a realistic outlook for your tooth and explain what tends to shorten or extend a crown’s life.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness or sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days. Contact the office if pain is severe, lasts longer than expected or the bite feels uneven.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth often benefit from a crown after root canal treatment because they can become brittle. Front teeth sometimes do well with a filling alone. The dentist will explain the recommendation for your tooth and the reasons behind it before you decide.

What should I do if my temporary crown falls off?

Keep the temporary and call the office. Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean. The prepared tooth can be sensitive and may shift without protection, so it should be recemented reasonably soon rather than left for the next appointment.

Will my crown match my other teeth?

Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, it is usually best to do so first, since crowns do not change colour. Discuss your plans so the shade can be chosen to match your preferred result.
