Full-coverage protection

A crown holds a weakened tooth together for everyday chewing.

A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth above the gumline. It is often recommended when a tooth has a very large filling, a crack, a broken cusp or has had root canal treatment. By surrounding the tooth, a crown spreads chewing forces and helps prevent further breakage, while also restoring shape and appearance.

Patients from Vanessa usually need two appointments at our Port Dover office for a crown, a few weeks apart, while the permanent crown is being made. The dentist will explain why a crown is suggested, whether a smaller restoration such as an onlay could work instead, and what material suits the tooth.

Why a crown

Crowns are recommended when a tooth needs more support.

When a filling is not enough

When most of a tooth’s structure has been lost to decay, old fillings or fractures, what remains can be too thin to withstand normal chewing. A filling alone might crack the tooth further. A crown wraps around and reinforces it. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are particularly likely to need a crown, because they become more brittle.

Asking about alternatives

It is reasonable to ask whether an onlay, which covers only part of the tooth, could preserve more natural structure. The dentist will look at the size of the damage, the location of any cracks and your bite. Ask them to show you the X-ray or photos and explain why a full crown is the better choice for that tooth.

Preparing the tooth

The first visit prepares the tooth and records its shape.

  1. Shaping and impressions

After numbing, the dentist removes decay and old filling material, builds up the core if needed, and reshapes the outside of the tooth so the crown can fit over it. An impression or digital scan records the prepared tooth and your bite. A shade is selected for tooth-coloured crowns so the result blends naturally with neighbouring teeth.

  2. Wearing a temporary crown

A temporary crown is cemented to protect the tooth while the permanent one is made in a dental laboratory. Temporaries are less sturdy, so chew carefully on that side, avoid sticky foods like toffee, and slide floss out sideways instead of pulling up. If the temporary comes loose, call the office rather than leaving the tooth exposed.

Fitting the crown

The permanent crown is checked carefully before it is fixed.

Checking fit, colour and bite

At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the new crown is tried on. The dentist checks how it seats at the gumline, how it contacts the teeth beside it, whether the colour matches and how your bite meets it. Small adjustments are made at this stage. Speak up if anything feels high or looks wrong in the mirror.

Cementing and first days

Once you and the dentist are satisfied, the crown is permanently cemented or bonded. Some mild sensitivity or gum tenderness for a few days is common and usually settles. If your bite feels uneven after the numbness wears off, or the tooth aches when chewing, call so the crown can be checked and adjusted promptly.

Making it last

The tooth under a crown still needs care.

  • Protecting the edges

A crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath can, especially where the crown meets the gum. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, paying attention to that margin. Regular professional cleanings help keep the gums around the crown healthy, which is important for how long it lasts and how it looks.

  • Habits and checkups

Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using your teeth as tools, since porcelain can chip. If you grind or clench, a night guard may be recommended to protect the crown and the opposite teeth. At checkups the dentist examines the crown’s edges and your bite, and takes X-rays from time to time to check the tooth beneath.

Planning your appointment

Arranging crown visits from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment or your crown preparation appointment. Ask how far apart the two visits are likely to be, so you can plan travel and time away from work.

If the tooth is currently cracked or painful, mention it when you call, as it may need to be seen sooner than a routine booking.

Dental crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a dental crown last?

Many crowns last for many years with good care, though there is no fixed lifespan. Decay at the edges, gum disease, grinding and accidents can shorten it. Daily cleaning, regular checkups and protecting the crown from very hard foods all help.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity or soreness afterward is common for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed usually helps, and lasting pain should be reported.

What are crowns made of?

Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal or porcelain fused to metal. The choice depends on the tooth’s location, your bite, appearance and how much space is available. The dentist will explain which material suits your tooth best.

Can a crown fall off?

Occasionally, especially if the tooth underneath decays or the cement weakens. If a crown comes off, keep it safe, avoid chewing on that side, and call the office. It may be possible to recement it after the tooth is checked.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth often do, because they become more brittle after root canal treatment and face heavy chewing forces. Front teeth sometimes manage with a filling. The dentist will recommend what suits the particular tooth that was treated.
