A crown is a custom cap that covers the visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape and strength. It may be recommended after a large filling fails, when a tooth cracks, following root canal treatment, or to improve the appearance of a badly discoloured or misshapen tooth. The material and design depend on the tooth’s position and the forces on it.
Turkey Point residents and seasonal visitors can have a tooth assessed for a crown at our Port Dover office. Since crowns typically involve more than one step, let the team know about any plans to be away so timing can be discussed.

Why a crown
Teeth with large old fillings, cracked cusps or extensive decay may be too weak for another filling. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often crowned to protect them from fracturing. Crowns can also cover implants or anchor a bridge. The dentist will explain why a crown is recommended in your particular case.
Sometimes an onlay, which covers only part of the tooth, can preserve more natural structure. In other cases, a large bonded filling may be a reasonable interim choice. Ask the dentist about the pros and cons of each, including how long they might last and what would happen if you chose to wait.
Materials
All-ceramic and porcelain crowns can closely resemble natural enamel and are often used for front teeth and visible areas. Some modern ceramics are strong enough for back teeth as well. The dentist will consider your bite, any grinding and the amount of space available when recommending a ceramic option.
Metal crowns, including gold alloys, are very durable and need less tooth reduction, though they are more noticeable. Porcelain fused to metal combines a tooth-coloured surface with a metal core. Ask how each material might wear against your opposing teeth and what appearance you can expect over time.
The process
After numbing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. Impressions or a digital scan capture the tooth and bite, and a shade is selected. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final crown is made. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side and call if the temporary comes off.
At the second visit the temporary is removed and the final crown is tried in. The dentist checks fit, contact with neighbouring teeth, bite and colour before cementing or bonding it. If something feels high or tight, say so. Minor adjustments are easier to make before the crown is permanently attached.
Living with a crown
Some sensitivity or gum tenderness is common for a short while after the crown is placed. If your bite feels uneven or discomfort persists beyond a couple of weeks, contact the office. Chew carefully until the numbness wears off. Most people can return to normal eating within a day.
The tooth under a crown can still develop decay at the edges, so brush and floss carefully along the gum line. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect both crowns and natural teeth. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the crown margins and gum health.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment of the tooth in question. Mention any pain, previous treatment and how long you will be in the area.
If another dentist has recommended a crown, bring their X-rays or notes so the team can review them and avoid unnecessary repeat images.

Many crowns last for years. Lifespan depends on material, oral hygiene, bite forces and habits such as grinding. Regular checkups help identify wear or problems early.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shade-matched to neighbouring teeth. Discuss appearance with the dentist, especially for front teeth, and look closely at the try-in.
Call the office. Keep the temporary and avoid chewing on that side. The prepared tooth can be sensitive, so it is best to have it recemented soon.
Yes, decay can develop where the crown meets the tooth. Good brushing, flossing and regular exams help prevent problems around the crown edges.
Inlays and onlays restore larger cavities while keeping more natural tooth than a crown. Turkey Point patients can learn when they fit best and how they are placed.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Turkey Point patients can learn how to protect it temporarily and when to call our Port Dover office.
