A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape and strength. Crowns are often recommended for teeth with large fillings, cracks, significant wear or after root canal treatment. They can also improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth when simpler options would not hold up.
Townsend residents can have crowns assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is being suggested for that particular tooth, which materials might suit its position and your bite, and how many appointments the process usually takes from preparation to final fitting.

Why a crown?
A tooth with a large filling or a crack can flex under biting forces and eventually break. A crown holds the tooth together and spreads those forces. Back teeth treated with a root canal are often crowned because they become more brittle. Severely worn teeth from grinding may also benefit from the protection a crown provides.
If enough healthy tooth remains, a filling, onlay or bonding may be possible instead, preserving more natural structure. Ask the dentist why a crown is preferred in your case and what the risks of waiting or choosing a smaller restoration might be. Understanding the reasoning helps you make an informed choice.
Preparing the tooth
After the area is numbed, the dentist removes decay and old filling material, then reshapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. If a lot of tooth is missing, a core build-up may be placed first to create a stable foundation. The amount of reshaping depends on the material chosen and the tooth’s position.
Impressions or digital scans are then taken, and a shade is selected in natural light to match the teeth around it. A temporary crown protects the tooth until the permanent one is ready. Temporaries are less durable, so avoid sticky or hard foods on that side, floss by sliding it out sideways and call the office if it comes loose, breaks or causes discomfort.
Fitting the crown
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is tried in. The dentist checks how it fits at the gumline, how your teeth meet and whether the colour blends with neighbouring teeth. This is the moment to mention anything about the shape or shade that does not look right to you.
Once you and the dentist are satisfied, the crown is cemented or bonded onto the tooth. Your bite is checked again and adjusted if needed. Some sensitivity or a slightly different feel is common for a few days. If the bite still feels high after that, contact the office for an adjustment.
Caring for crowns
The tooth underneath a crown can still decay, especially at the margin where the crown meets the natural tooth near the gum. Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and pay particular attention to that gumline. Regular cleanings and checkups let the dentist monitor the crown’s fit and spot any problems at the edges early, while they are still simple to fix.
Crowns can chip or loosen under heavy forces. Avoid chewing ice, hard candies or using your teeth as tools. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect crowns and natural teeth. If a crown comes off, keep it safe and contact the office rather than gluing it back yourself.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention the tooth involved, whether it is painful and if another dentist has already recommended a crown. The team can arrange an exam to confirm the plan.
Bring any previous X-rays or treatment plans, and let the team know about grinding or jaw discomfort that might affect material choice.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many crowns last for years, depending on the material, your bite, grinding habits and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help catch problems at the margins early, which can extend the life of the crown and the tooth beneath it.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterwards is normal and usually fades. Contact the office if pain persists or the bite feels uncomfortable.
Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal or combinations. The choice depends on the tooth’s position, your bite and appearance preferences. The dentist will explain the options that suit your situation.
Keep the crown in a safe container, avoid chewing on that side and call the office. Do not use household glue. The dentist can check whether the crown can be recemented or needs replacing.
Yes. Decay can develop where the crown meets the natural tooth, often without symptoms at first. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checkups with X-rays when needed are important to protect the tooth under the crown over the long term.
Inlays and onlays repair damage too large for a filling but not severe enough for a crown. Townsend patients can learn when they suit and what to expect.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Learn how to protect it, what to bring and how our Port Dover team decides on the right repair.
