A crown is a custom cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It may be recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay, significant wear or has had root canal treatment. By encasing the tooth, a crown can help hold it together and restore its shape for chewing and appearance.
Tillsonburg residents can have crowns planned and placed at our Port Dover office. Crowns commonly involve more than one appointment, so ask how many visits your tooth will likely need and how far apart they are, which helps when arranging travel.

Why a crown?
When much of the tooth has been lost to decay or fracture, a filling alone may leave thin walls prone to breaking. A crown covers those weak areas. Teeth that have had root canal treatment, particularly back teeth, are often crowned because they can become more brittle. Ask why a crown is advised for your tooth.
Sometimes an onlay, which covers only part of the tooth, or a large filling may be reasonable options. Each choice involves a different amount of tooth reduction and lifespan. Ask the dentist to compare them and explain how your bite, grinding habits and the tooth’s location affect the recommendation.
Choosing materials
Ceramic and porcelain crowns can be shade-matched to neighbouring teeth, making them a common choice where appearance matters. Some ceramics are very strong and used on back teeth too. Ask how the chosen material handles biting forces in that position and how it is likely to look next to your natural teeth.
Metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns may be suggested for teeth under heavy pressure or where space is limited. Each material has trade-offs in strength, appearance and how much tooth must be reduced. The dentist can explain which options suit your situation and why one might be preferred.
The process
After freezing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. If a lot of tooth is missing, a core build-up may be placed first. Impressions or scans record the shape and your bite. Let the team know about any sensitivity or pain you have felt in that tooth beforehand.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side. At the next visit the temporary is removed, and the final crown is checked for fit, bite and shade before being cemented. Plan time for adjustments rather than rushing the return to Tillsonburg.
Caring for it
Mild sensitivity or gum tenderness for a few days after the crown is placed is common. If the bite feels high, pain increases or sensitivity persists, contact the Port Dover office. An adjustment may solve the problem. Tell the team if the crown feels loose at any point.
The tooth under a crown can still decay at the edges, so brush twice daily and clean between teeth carefully. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects, and ask about a night guard if you grind. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the crown margins and the surrounding gum health.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss a tooth that may need a crown. Ask how many appointments are expected and how long each usually takes.
Bring X-rays or treatment plans from another dentist if you have them, and mention any history of sensitivity or grinding.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many crowns last for years, but lifespan depends on the material, bite forces, home care and the health of the tooth underneath. Regular checkups help catch problems at the edges before they affect the tooth.
Local anaesthetic is used while the tooth is prepared, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles. Tell the team about any concerns before treatment begins.
Keep it safe and contact the office. The prepared tooth may be sensitive and can shift without protection. The team can advise whether to recement the temporary or come in before the scheduled appointment.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shade-matched to neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, discuss it first, because crowns do not change colour with whitening and the shade is usually chosen after whitening is complete.
Not always. A root canal is needed only if the nerve is inflamed, infected or likely to be affected. Many crowns are placed on teeth with healthy nerves. The dentist will explain what applies to your tooth.
Inlays and onlays sit between a filling and a crown, keeping more natural tooth. How they are planned and fitted over two visits for Tillsonburg patients.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. How to protect it, what to keep and how Tillsonburg patients can arrange a repair.
