A dental crown covers the visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape and helping it withstand chewing. Crowns are often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment. They can also improve the appearance of a misshapen or badly discoloured tooth when other options would not hold up.
Teeterville patients can have a crown assessed and completed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is suggested, which materials could work and how many appointments to expect, so you can plan the trips ahead of time and avoid long gaps between visits.

Why a crown
Teeth with large fillings, cracked cusps or significant wear can break under biting forces. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are particularly prone to fracture because they become more brittle. A crown spreads the load around the tooth and holds it together. The dentist will explain what they see on the tooth and X-ray, and why it matters.
If enough healthy tooth remains, a filling, inlay or onlay may be a more conservative option. Ask the dentist to compare these alternatives, including how much tooth each would remove and how long each tends to last. Understanding the reasoning, and what would happen if you waited, helps you feel confident about the final recommendation.
Choosing materials
All-ceramic and zirconia crowns can be matched to your natural tooth colour and are commonly used on front and back teeth. Their strength and translucency vary by material and design. The dentist considers your bite, grinding habits, the space available and appearance when suggesting a material for a particular tooth and position in the mouth.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and need less tooth removal in some cases, but they are visible when you smile or laugh. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal core with a tooth-coloured surface. Discuss which factors matter most to you, such as aesthetics, durability or preserving tooth structure, so the choice reflects your priorities.
The process
After freezing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth to make room for the crown. A buildup may be placed if much tooth is missing. An impression or scan is taken, and a temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Ask about the expected wait before your return trip from Teeterville.
At the second visit the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, colour and bite before cementing it in place. Mild sensitivity or gum tenderness for a few days is common. Call if your bite feels high or pain increases rather than settling after the first several days.
Long-term care
Temporary crowns are held with light cement. Avoid sticky foods like caramel and chewing gum, chew on the other side when possible and slide floss out sideways rather than lifting it up. If the temporary comes off, keep it and call the office so it can be put back promptly, before the tooth shifts or becomes sensitive.
Decay can still form where the crown meets the tooth, so brush and floss carefully along the gum line. Avoid chewing ice or using your teeth as tools. If you grind, a night guard can help protect the crown. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the margins and surrounding gum and catch problems early.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment or schedule a crown that was recommended earlier. Mention any pain, cracks or previous root canal treatment on the tooth in question.
If you have X-rays or a treatment plan from another office, ask about sending them ahead so the dentist can review them.
Before you book

Many crowns last for years with good care. Lifespan depends on the material, bite forces, habits such as grinding and how well the tooth and gums are maintained. Regular checkups help spot wear or decay at the edges early, while it is easier to manage.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and usually settles within days. Contact the office if discomfort grows instead of easing.
Keep it safe, avoid chewing on that side and call the office. The tooth may be sensitive without it, and it can shift if left uncovered for long. The temporary can usually be recemented at a short visit.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can, especially at the edge near the gum. Good brushing, flossing and regular checkups help protect it, and limiting frequent sugary snacks reduces the risk further.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shade-matched to neighbouring teeth under good lighting. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do it before the crown is made, since crowns do not change colour with whitening and could look darker afterward.
Too much damage for a filling, not enough for a crown? Teeterville patients can learn how inlays and onlays restore back teeth while saving natural structure.
A filling or crown came out? Teeterville patients can learn how to protect the tooth, what to bring and when a lost restoration needs prompt care.
