A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible portion of a tooth. It is commonly recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, significant wear or has had root canal treatment. By holding the tooth together and spreading biting forces, a crown can help protect it from breaking further.
Crown treatment usually involves two visits, so it helps to understand the process before arranging time away from Selkirk. The dentist at our Port Dover office will explain why a crown is being suggested, what material options exist for that tooth and whether a smaller restoration could reasonably do the job instead.

Why a crown?
Teeth with large fillings, broken cusps, cracks or extensive decay may no longer have enough strength to withstand chewing. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often crowned because they can become brittle. A crown can also be used to support a bridge or restore an implant. The dentist will explain which factors apply to your tooth.
If enough healthy structure remains, a filling, onlay or bonding may be sufficient and require less tooth reduction. Ask the dentist to compare these options with you. Understanding the trade-offs between conserving tooth structure and providing full coverage helps you make a decision that suits both the tooth and your long-term plans.
Materials
All-ceramic and zirconia crowns can be matched to the colour of surrounding teeth and are often chosen for visible areas. Their strength varies by type, and some are suited to back teeth that take heavy forces. The dentist will consider your bite, grinding habits and appearance goals when recommending a tooth-coloured material.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and require less tooth reduction in some cases, though they are more visible. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Each has advantages and drawbacks. Ask the dentist why a specific material is suggested and how it might look and perform over time.
Getting the crown
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown. Old filling material and decay are removed, and a core may be built up if needed. Impressions or scans are taken and a shade selected. The dentist will explain each step so you know what is happening throughout the appointment.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made. Avoid sticky or hard foods on that side. At the second visit, the temporary is removed, the new crown is tried in and checked for fit, bite and appearance, then cemented. Let the dentist know about anything that feels uncomfortable before cementation.
Long-term care
Some sensitivity or gum tenderness after a crown is placed can occur and often settles within days. If your bite feels high, pain increases, or the crown feels loose, contact the office. These issues can usually be addressed with a quick visit. Chew carefully at first and avoid very hard foods until you are confident with the new crown.
The tooth beneath a crown can still decay at the edge where the crown meets the tooth. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep up with regular checkups. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect the crown. Report any chips, dark lines at the gum or bad taste promptly.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to discuss the tooth and book the preparation appointment. Ask how long the gap between visits is likely to be so the second trip can be planned.
Bring any recent X-rays from another office, and mention whether you grind your teeth or have had problems with previous crowns.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort increases or the bite feels uneven.
Many crowns last for years, but lifespan depends on material, bite, grinding and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help spot wear or decay at the edges early. The dentist can discuss expectations for your particular crown.
Yes. Decay can develop where the crown meets the natural tooth. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checkups help prevent this. Report any sensitivity or dark lines near the gum promptly.
Contact the office so it can be recemented. Keep the temporary if you can. Avoid chewing on that side and very hot or cold foods until it is replaced, as the prepared tooth may be sensitive.
Back teeth often benefit from a crown after a root canal because they can become more fragile. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling. The dentist will recommend what suits the specific tooth.
When a cavity is too large for a filling but a crown seems excessive, an inlay or onlay may fit. Selkirk patients can compare options at our Port Dover office.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Selkirk patients can learn how to protect it and when to call our Port Dover office for repair.
