A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, significant wear or has had root canal treatment. By holding the remaining structure together, a crown can reduce the risk of the tooth breaking further.
Renton residents can have a crown assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is being suggested, what materials might suit the tooth and how the usual two-visit process works, so you can plan the trips and time away from work.

Why a crown?
Large or failing fillings, cracks, teeth that have broken, heavy wear from grinding and back teeth after root canal treatment are common reasons. A crown can also improve the appearance of a badly discoloured or misshapen tooth. Sometimes there are no symptoms; the dentist may see structural weakness on examination or X-rays before pain starts.
Ask why a crown is preferred over a filling or onlay for this tooth, what would happen if you waited and what the expected lifespan might be. Understanding the reasoning helps you make an informed choice. It is also reasonable to ask about alternatives and the trade-offs of each, including an onlay where suitable for the tooth.
Choosing a material
All-ceramic and porcelain crowns are tooth-coloured and can look natural, which makes them a common choice for front teeth and visible areas. Some modern ceramics are also strong enough for back teeth. The dentist will match the shade to surrounding teeth and explain how the material performs under biting forces over the years. Ask about upkeep.
Metal crowns and porcelain fused to metal are durable options sometimes recommended for back teeth or for people who grind heavily. They may show a dark line at the gum over time. The dentist will discuss the pros and considerations of each material based on your tooth, bite and preferences, so the choice is informed.
The process
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown. Any decay is removed, and the tooth may be built up with a core. Impressions or a scan are taken. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent one is made. Avoid sticky foods on the temporary.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed, and the final crown is checked for fit, colour and bite. The dentist makes small adjustments if needed, then cements it. Your bite should feel normal; if it feels high afterward, call the office. Renton patients may want to schedule both visits at once when booking the first one.
Caring for it
Some sensitivity or gum tenderness is common for a few days after the crown is placed. Chewing should feel comfortable once things settle. If the crown feels loose, the bite seems off or sensitivity worsens rather than improves, contact the office for a check rather than waiting until your next visit. Small fixes are often quick.
The tooth under a crown can still develop decay at the edge where crown meets tooth. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular checkups. Avoid chewing ice or using teeth as tools. A night guard may be recommended if you grind, to protect the crown and other teeth. Mention any clenching you notice.
Planning your appointment
Phone 519-583-2929 to book an assessment or crown appointment at our Port Dover office. Ask about scheduling both the preparation and fitting visits so you can plan travel ahead of time.
Mention any sensitivity, grinding habits or previous problems with the tooth so the dentist can plan appropriately for your visit.

Many crowns last for years, but longevity depends on the material, bite forces, grinding and how well the tooth and gums are cared for. Regular checkups help the dentist spot wear or decay early on.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is normal for a short time. Let the dentist know if discomfort lasts or becomes severe after the visit.
Call the office. Keep the temporary if possible. The dentist can advise whether to try reseating it with temporary cement or come in. Avoid chewing on that side until it is replaced, and keep the area clean.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown is made, since crowns do not lighten with whitening products. Bring up your plans at the first visit.
Yes. Decay can form where the crown meets the natural tooth. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checkups help protect the crowned tooth. Pay particular attention to the gumline, where the crown edge sits, since plaque collects there easily.
Inlays and onlays repair back teeth that need more than a filling but less than a crown. Renton patients can find out when they fit at our Port Dover office.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Renton patients can learn how to protect it, what to bring and how repair is arranged in Port Dover.
