Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseFull coverage, lasting support
When a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive wear or has had root canal treatment, the remaining structure may be too weak to handle chewing forces on its own. A crown is a custom cap that covers the visible part of the tooth, holding it together and restoring its shape, size and appearance.
Crowns are planned and fitted at our Port Dover office for patients who make the trip from Port Ryerse. The dentist will explain why a crown is recommended for that particular tooth, which materials are suitable and what the appointments involve from preparation to final placement.

Why a crown
Teeth with large fillings, cracks or significant breakdown often benefit from full coverage, which spreads chewing forces and reduces the risk of fracture. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are frequently crowned because they can become more brittle. Ask the dentist to explain what makes a crown preferable to a filling for your tooth.
Crowns also cover implants, anchor bridges and improve the appearance of teeth that are badly discoloured or misshapen. Teeth severely worn by grinding may be rebuilt with crowns as part of a wider plan. Each use has its own considerations, which the dentist will review with you.
Choosing a material
All-ceramic and zirconia crowns can closely match natural teeth and are popular for both front and back teeth. Their strength and translucency vary by type. The dentist will consider your bite, the visibility of the tooth and the amount of space available when recommending a ceramic option.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and need less tooth reduction, which can be useful on back teeth under heavy load. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal core with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask about appearance, longevity and any material sensitivities you have.
The appointments
The tooth is numbed and reshaped to make room for the crown. Any decay is removed and the core may be rebuilt. Impressions or scans record the shape, and a shade is selected. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Be gentle with the temporary and avoid sticky foods.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is tried in. The dentist checks fit, contacts with neighbouring teeth, colour and bite before cementing it. You may notice the tooth feels slightly different at first. Report any high spots after the numbness wears off.
Living with a crown
A crown does not decay, but the natural tooth beneath it can, especially where the crown meets the gum. Brush carefully along that edge and clean between teeth daily. Regular checkups and X-rays allow the dentist to check the margins and supporting tooth over time.
Contact the office if the crown feels loose, you notice sensitivity or pain when biting, the gum around it becomes swollen or a piece chips. Grinding can damage crowns, so ask about a night guard if you clench. Prompt attention to small issues may avoid having to replace the crown.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to schedule an assessment of the tooth. If another dentist has recommended a crown, bring the treatment plan and any recent X-rays.
Plan for two appointments in most cases, and ask how long to allow for the preparation visit.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Crowns can last many years, but lifespan depends on material, bite forces, hygiene and the health of the tooth underneath. Regular checkups help identify issues such as decay at the edges early.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common. Persistent pain should be reported to the office.
Contact the office. Keep the temporary if you can and avoid chewing on that side. The prepared tooth may be sensitive, and leaving it uncovered for too long can allow it to shift.
Not always. Root canal treatment is only needed if the nerve is infected, inflamed beyond recovery or exposed. Many crowned teeth have healthy nerves. The dentist will test and explain.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown is made, because crowns do not change colour with whitening products.
Inlays and onlays restore back teeth that need more than a filling but less than a crown. Port Ryerse patients can explore this option at our Port Dover office.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Port Ryerse patients can learn how to protect it and arrange repair at our Port Dover office.
