A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment and needs protection. Crowns can also improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth and are used on top of dental implants.
If a dentist has suggested a crown, or you think a tooth may need one, our Port Dover office can assess it for Pine Grove patients. The dentist will explain why a crown is advised and whether a smaller restoration might suffice.

When a crown helps
A tooth with a very large or failing filling, a cracked cusp, significant wear, or a root canal on a back tooth often benefits from a crown. Crowns also anchor bridges and restore implants. The goal is to protect remaining tooth structure from breaking under biting forces and to restore normal chewing.
If enough healthy tooth remains, an onlay or large filling may protect it while removing less structure. Ask the dentist to explain why a full crown is preferred in your case, what would happen if you chose a smaller option and how each affects the tooth’s long-term outlook.
Materials
All-ceramic and zirconia crowns can closely match natural tooth colour and are common for front and back teeth. Some ceramics are more translucent and natural-looking, while others are stronger for heavy biting. The dentist will consider the tooth’s position, your bite and the thickness of material needed when recommending one.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and need less tooth reduction, though their colour makes them better suited to back teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask about appearance, longevity and how each material wears against opposing teeth before choosing.
The process
At the first appointment, the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown. Any decay is removed, and sometimes a core is built up to support it. Impressions or a digital scan are taken, along with shade selection. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final crown is made.
Temporary crowns are not as strong, so avoid sticky or hard foods and clean carefully around them. At the second visit, the temporary is removed, and the final crown is tried in for fit, colour and bite before being cemented. Tell the dentist if anything feels high or uncomfortable before you leave.
Living with a crown
Some sensitivity to temperature or mild gum soreness is common for a few days. If the bite feels uneven, chewing hurts, or sensitivity persists for more than a couple of weeks, call the office. A small adjustment often helps. Ongoing pain may mean the nerve needs further evaluation.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can at the edges. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular checkups so the margins can be monitored. Avoid using crowned teeth to crack nuts or open packages, and ask about a night guard if you grind.
Planning your appointment
Book an assessment at our Port Dover office if a tooth is cracked, heavily filled or has been recommended for a crown. The dentist will explain the plan and visits involved.
Bring any X-rays or treatment plans from another dentist, along with your medication list. Allow time for freezing at the preparation visit.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many crowns last for years, often more than a decade, depending on material, bite and home care. Regular checkups help catch wear or decay at the edges so problems can be addressed early.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure but not pain. Some soreness or sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days.
It can happen, especially with sticky foods or decay underneath. Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side and call the office. It may be possible to recement it after examination.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shade-matched to neighbouring teeth. If you plan whitening, do it before the crown is made, since crowns do not change colour afterward.
No. Many crowns are placed on teeth with healthy nerves. A root canal is only needed if the nerve is infected, inflamed or damaged. The dentist will test the tooth before recommending it.
Inlays and onlays repair damaged back teeth while keeping more natural structure than a crown. Pine Grove patients can see when they fit and how they are made.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Pine Grove patients can learn how to protect it, what to bring and how repair is usually approached.
