A crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape and helping to hold it together. Crowns are often recommended for teeth with large fillings, cracks, significant wear or after root canal treatment. They may also be placed on implants or used to anchor a bridge. Materials vary in appearance and strength.
Patients from Peacock Point can have crown treatment at our Port Dover office. Since crowns typically involve two appointments, let the team know if you spend part of the year elsewhere so both visits fit within your time in the area.

Why a crown
Teeth with extensive decay, large old fillings, fractured cusps or cracks may not be strong enough for another filling. After root canal treatment, back teeth in particular are prone to breaking and often benefit from a crown. Crowns can also improve the appearance of a misshapen or badly discoloured tooth when other options are not suitable.
Not every damaged tooth needs a crown. An inlay or onlay may cover part of the tooth while conserving more natural structure. Bonding may be enough for small repairs. Ask the dentist why a crown is recommended over these alternatives, and what the risks would be of choosing a smaller restoration for your particular tooth.
Materials
All-ceramic and porcelain crowns can closely resemble natural teeth and are often chosen for visible areas. Some modern ceramics are also strong enough for back teeth. The dentist will consider your bite, any grinding habits and the space available when recommending a material, since each has different strengths and wear characteristics.
Gold and other metal alloys are very durable and require less tooth removal, but they are visible. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask how each material might affect the opposing teeth, how it looks over time and whether you have any metal sensitivities to consider.
Treatment steps
After numbing, the dentist removes decay and reshapes the tooth to make room for the crown. If much of the tooth is missing, a core build-up may be placed first. Impressions or scans are taken, and a temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth. Avoid sticky foods on the temporary and contact the office if it comes off.
At the second appointment, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown tried in. The dentist checks the fit, colour and bite, making adjustments as needed. Once everything is right, the crown is cemented or bonded in place. You may feel some sensitivity or gum tenderness for a few days afterwards.
Aftercare
The tooth under a crown can still decay at the edge where crown meets tooth. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth carefully. Avoid using crowned teeth to crack nuts or open packages. If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard would help protect the crown from chipping.
Contact the office if the crown feels loose, your bite feels uneven, you notice a dark line at the gum or sensitivity develops. These may signal issues that are easier to fix early. Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect the margins and surrounding gum tissue as part of your routine examination.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss a tooth that may need a crown. Mention your seasonal schedule if applicable so both appointments can be planned within your time in the area.
Bring records of recent root canal treatment or X-rays from another dentist, and mention any grinding or jaw concerns.

Many crowns last for years, depending on the material, your bite, grinding habits and home care. Regular checkups help identify wear or problems at the edges before they become more serious.
Ceramic and porcelain crowns can be shade-matched to surrounding teeth. The dentist will discuss colour and shape with you. Metal crowns are durable but visible, so they are often used for back teeth.
Local anaesthetic is used during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort persists.
Keep the temporary and call the office. Avoid chewing on that side. The dentist may recement it or suggest a short-term solution until the permanent crown is ready.
Yes. Decay can form at the edge where the crown meets the natural tooth. Good brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checkups help protect the tooth beneath the crown.
Too large for a filling but not needing a full crown? An inlay or onlay may fit. Peacock Point patients can compare these restorations at our Port Dover dental office.
