A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape and strength. Crowns are often recommended after a large filling fails, a tooth cracks, root canal treatment is completed or a tooth is badly worn. They can also improve the appearance of a discoloured or misshapen tooth when other options are not enough.
Patients from Nixon can have crowns assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is being recommended, what alternatives exist and how many visits are typically needed. Knowing the process ahead of time makes it easier to plan around work and travel.

Why a crown
When a large part of a tooth has been lost to decay or fracture, a filling may not provide enough support. A crown wraps around the tooth, holding it together and spreading biting forces more evenly. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often crowned because they can become brittle and are at higher risk of breaking under chewing pressure.
Depending on the damage, an onlay may preserve more natural tooth while still offering protection. For smaller issues, a filling or bonding might be enough. If a tooth cannot be restored, extraction and replacement may be discussed. Ask the dentist to explain how each option compares in durability, appearance and the amount of tooth structure removed.
Preparation visit
After freezing the area, the dentist removes any decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. If a lot of structure is missing, a core build-up may be placed first to create a solid foundation. The dentist will explain each step as it happens, and you can signal for a break at any time if you need one.
Impressions or scans record the prepared tooth and your bite. The shade is selected to match neighbouring teeth. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final crown is made. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side, and slide floss out sideways rather than lifting it, to reduce the chance of dislodging the temporary.
Fitting the crown
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the new crown is tried on. The dentist checks how it fits at the gumline, how it contacts neighbouring teeth and whether the colour blends naturally. This is your chance to mention anything that looks or feels wrong. Small adjustments are usually easy to make before the crown is cemented in place.
Once everything looks right, the crown is bonded or cemented. Your bite is checked carefully so the crown does not hit too early when you close. A crown that feels high can cause soreness, so let the dentist know if something feels off once the freezing wears off. A quick adjustment is often all that is needed to fix it.
Caring for it
The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can, especially at the edge where the crown meets the tooth. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular checkups. Gum inflammation around a crown can also cause problems, so pay attention to bleeding or tenderness and mention it to the hygienist at your next cleaning.
Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using your teeth as tools, which can chip or crack crowns. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect them. Report a loose crown, sharp edge or pain when biting promptly. Keeping a crown that comes off in a safe container and calling the office helps the dentist decide whether it can be recemented.
Planning your appointment
Book an assessment at our Port Dover office if a tooth has been recommended for a crown or you have a large, failing filling. Ask how many appointments to expect so you can plan travel from Nixon.
If another dentist has suggested a crown, bring any X-rays or notes. The team can review them alongside a fresh examination.

Crowns often last many years, but their lifespan depends on oral hygiene, your bite, grinding habits and the material used. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor the crown and the tooth beneath it, catching problems before they become serious.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded and shaped to blend with your other teeth. The dentist will check colour and fit with you before cementing. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it is best to do that before the shade is chosen.
The tooth is frozen during preparation, so the procedure itself should be comfortable. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and usually fades within a few days. Contact the office if pain persists or worsens.
Keep the temporary safe and call the office. The prepared tooth may feel sensitive and can shift if left uncovered too long. The team will advise you on how soon to come in and what to do in the meantime.
Yes. Decay can develop where the crown meets the natural tooth. Brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checkups help protect that area. Catching decay early around a crown usually allows simpler treatment, sometimes without replacing the crown.
Inlays and onlays repair back teeth too damaged for a filling but not ready for a crown. Nixon patients can learn when they fit and how they are made.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves a tooth exposed. Nixon patients can learn what to do with it, how to protect the tooth and when to call us.
