A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth, restoring its shape and strength. Crowns are often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, has had root canal treatment or is badly worn. They can also improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth when more conservative options will not do.
If a dentist has suggested a crown, or you live in Nanticoke and wonder whether one might be needed, our Port Dover office can examine the tooth, explain why a crown is or is not the best choice and walk you through the materials and appointments involved.

Why a crown
When a large portion of a tooth has been lost to decay, fracture or old fillings, the remaining walls can be prone to cracking under chewing forces. A crown wraps around the tooth and holds it together. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often crowned because they can become brittle and are more likely to split without that coverage.
Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. An onlay, which covers only part of the chewing surface, or a large filling may sometimes be suitable and remove less tooth structure. Ask the dentist to explain why a crown is recommended, what alternatives exist and what might happen if you decided to wait before treating the tooth.
Materials
All-ceramic crowns, including porcelain and zirconia, are popular for their natural look and are used on both front and back teeth. Different ceramics balance strength and translucency differently. The dentist will consider where the tooth sits, how much space is available and how heavily you bite when recommending a material that suits that specific tooth.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and may require less tooth reduction, though their colour makes them less common in visible areas. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine a metal core with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask about the trade-offs between appearance, wear on opposing teeth and long-term durability for each option being considered.
Getting a crown
At the first visit the tooth is numbed, any decay is removed and the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown. A core build-up may be placed if much of the tooth is missing. Impressions or a digital scan record the shape, and a shade is selected to blend with neighbouring teeth when a tooth-coloured material is used.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Chew gently on that side and avoid sticky foods that could pull it off. At the second visit the temporary is removed and the final crown is checked for fit, bite and appearance before it is cemented or bonded into place.
Long-term care
A crowned tooth can still develop decay at the edge where the crown meets the tooth, and the gums around it can become inflamed. Brush twice daily and clean between teeth carefully, paying attention to the gum line. Regular cleanings help keep the margins healthy, and the hygienist can suggest tools that make cleaning around the crown easier.
Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using teeth as tools, which can chip porcelain. If you grind, ask about a night guard to protect the crown. Report sensitivity that develops, a loose feeling, a bad taste or a crown that comes off. Keep a crown that falls out and bring it to the appointment.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to book an assessment or to schedule a crown that has already been recommended. Mention any pain or cracks so the team can plan the right length of appointment.
Plan for two visits in most cases, and bring any previous treatment plans or X-rays from another dentist.

Many crowns last for years, but lifespan depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and how well the tooth and gums are cared for. Regular checkups help the dentist spot wear or problems at the edges early.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so the procedure itself is usually comfortable. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and generally settles within days. Report any discomfort that worsens or lingers.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with neighbouring teeth. The final look depends on the material and the position of the tooth. Ask the dentist what result to expect and how the shade will be chosen at your appointment.
Call the office for advice. Keep the temporary and avoid chewing on that side. In the meantime, a small amount of dental adhesive from a pharmacy may hold it temporarily if the team suggests it, until it can be recemented.
Yes. Decay can develop where the crown meets the natural tooth. Good brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular checkups help protect the tooth underneath and extend the life of the crown over time.
Some back teeth need more than a filling but less than a crown. Nanticoke patients can see how damage and material choice shape an inlay or onlay plan.
A crown or filling that falls out leaves a tooth exposed. Nanticoke patients can learn how to protect it at home and arrange repair at our Port Dover office.
