Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office

A crown is a custom cap that covers the visible portion of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment and needs extra protection from fracture. Crowns can also improve the shape or colour of a tooth, though protecting function is usually the main goal.
Lynedoch patients told they may need a crown can come to our Port Dover office to discuss why it has been suggested and what the process involves. The dentist will explain the condition of the tooth, material options and the appointments typically needed from preparation to final placement.

Why a crown
Teeth with large fillings or cracks can flex under chewing forces and eventually split. A crown wraps around the tooth, helping distribute those forces. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often more brittle and commonly benefit from a crown. Ask the dentist to show you the weak areas on an X-ray or photo.
Crowns may also be used on implants, to anchor a bridge or to restore a tooth that is badly worn or misshapen. In some cases an onlay, which covers only part of the tooth, could be a more conservative alternative. Asking about all options helps you understand the reasoning behind the recommendation.
Choosing a material
All-ceramic and porcelain crowns can closely match natural tooth colour and are often chosen for visible teeth. Some modern ceramics are also strong enough for back teeth. The dentist will consider your bite, grinding habits and the amount of space available when recommending a ceramic option.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and need less tooth reduction, though they are more noticeable. Porcelain fused to metal combines strength with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask how each material is likely to wear against opposing teeth and what maintenance it might require.
The process
After freezing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. If a lot of tooth is missing, a core build-up may be placed first. Impressions or a scan record the shape, and a shade is selected. This visit usually takes longer than a standard filling.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Avoid sticky foods and floss carefully by sliding the floss out sideways. At the next visit, the permanent crown is tried in, adjusted and cemented. Mention any concerns about fit or colour before it is fixed in place.
After placement
Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a short time. If your bite feels high, or pain increases rather than fades, contact the office. A crown that feels loose or has a rough edge should also be checked rather than left until the next routine visit.
The tooth under a crown can still decay where the crown meets the gum. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and attend regular checkups so the margins can be examined. If you grind, a night guard may help protect the crown and nearby teeth from excessive wear.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to discuss a crown or arrange the preparation appointment. Ask how far apart the visits usually are so travel can be planned in advance.
If your temporary crown comes off between visits, keep it, call the office and avoid chewing on that side.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many crowns last for years, depending on the material, bite forces, habits and home care. Regular checkups help identify problems at the edges or with the underlying tooth before they become serious.
Freezing keeps the tooth comfortable during preparation. Some tenderness afterward is common and usually settles. Contact the office if pain persists or worsens.
Keep it and call the office. Avoid chewing on that side. The team can advise whether to try reseating it temporarily and arrange for it to be recemented to protect the prepared tooth.
Yes. Decay can develop where the crown meets the natural tooth. Brushing, flossing and regular checkups are important to protect the tooth underneath the crown.
Back teeth often benefit from a crown after root canal treatment because they can become more brittle. Front teeth may not always need one. The dentist will advise based on your tooth.
Too much damage for a filling but not enough for a crown? Lynedoch patients can ask our Port Dover dentist whether an inlay or onlay could restore the tooth.
A filling fell out or a crown came loose? Lynedoch patients can learn how to protect the tooth and when to call our Port Dover office for repair or replacement.
