A dental crown is a custom cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment, because the remaining structure may be too weak to withstand chewing forces alone. Crowns can also improve the shape or colour of a tooth when that is the goal.
Long Point patients who have been told they need a crown, or want a second look at a heavily filled tooth, can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover office. Most crowns involve two visits.

Why a crown
Common reasons include a cracked tooth that hurts when chewing, a large old filling with weak walls, a broken cusp, a tooth after root canal treatment and severe wear. A crown spreads biting forces across the whole tooth, reducing the risk of a split that could make the tooth unrestorable.
If enough healthy tooth remains, a filling or onlay that covers only part of the tooth may be suitable and preserve more structure. Ask the dentist why a full crown is recommended over a partial option, and what could happen if you delay or choose a more conservative approach.
Materials
All-ceramic and zirconia crowns are tooth-coloured and often used where appearance matters. Zirconia is known for strength and may suit back teeth. The dentist will consider how much space is available, your bite and how the crown will look next to neighbouring teeth.
Gold and other metal crowns are durable and require less tooth reduction in some cases, but they are visible. Porcelain fused to metal combines a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface. Each option has advantages and trade-offs, which the dentist can explain for the specific tooth.
The process
After freezing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. If much tooth is missing, a core build-up may be placed first. Impressions or digital scans are taken, and a shade is selected for tooth-coloured crowns. The records go to a laboratory for fabrication.
A temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime. Avoid sticky foods and floss gently by sliding it out rather than pulling up. At the second visit, the temporary is removed, and the permanent crown is checked for fit, colour and bite before being cemented in place.
Living with a crown
Mild sensitivity or gum tenderness can occur for a short time. If the bite feels high or the tooth aches when chewing, contact the office for an adjustment. A temporary crown that comes off should be reported promptly, as the prepared tooth can shift or become sensitive.
Brush and floss around the crown daily, paying attention to the gumline where decay can start at the margin. Keep regular checkups. Avoid chewing ice or other very hard items. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect both the crown and your natural teeth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment and ask how long the laboratory phase usually takes. Planning both appointments within your time nearby helps avoid wearing a temporary for longer than intended.
Bring any X-rays or notes from another dentist who recommended the crown, and mention whether the tooth has had root canal treatment.
Before you book

Many crowns last years with good care, but none are permanent. Longevity depends on material, bite, grinding and hygiene. Decay at the edge of the crown is a common reason for replacement.
Freezing keeps the tooth comfortable during preparation. Some tenderness afterward is normal and usually short-lived. Report pain that persists or worsens so the tooth can be checked.
Contact the office. Keep the temporary and avoid chewing on that side. A pharmacy temporary cement may help briefly, but the dentist should check and recement it to protect the tooth.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown is made, since crowns do not change colour.
Not always. A root canal is needed only if the nerve is inflamed or infected. Many teeth receive crowns without one. The dentist will test the tooth and explain the findings.
When a cavity is too big for a filling but a crown seems excessive, an inlay or onlay may help. Long Point patients can compare options at our Port Dover office.
A crown that pops off or a filling that falls out leaves a tooth exposed. Long Point patients can protect it and call our Port Dover office to arrange repair.
