A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth above the gum. Crowns are often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment. By holding the tooth together and spreading biting forces, a crown can help a weakened tooth keep working.
La Salette patients who have been told they may need a crown can have it assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is suggested, what alternatives exist and what the appointments involve before any work begins.

Why a crown
When a large portion of a tooth is missing or filled, the remaining walls can be thin and prone to cracking. A crown covers and reinforces the tooth. If a crack has been found, a crown may help hold the segments together. Ask the dentist to show you the images or photos that support the recommendation.
Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often more brittle and may benefit from a crown to reduce the risk of fracture. Front teeth may sometimes be restored differently. The dentist will explain the reasoning for your tooth, including whether an onlay could be a more conservative alternative.
Materials
Ceramic and porcelain crowns can closely match natural teeth and are commonly used on visible teeth. Some ceramic materials are also strong enough for back teeth. The dentist considers the amount of space available, your bite and whether you grind when recommending a particular type.
Metal crowns, including gold, are very durable and require less tooth removal in some cases, though their colour is noticeable. Porcelain fused to metal combines strength with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask about the advantages and trade-offs of each material so you can make an informed choice.
The appointments
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown. Any decay is removed and the tooth may be built up with filling material. Impressions or a digital scan are taken, and a shade is selected if the crown will be tooth-coloured.
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Avoid sticky and very hard foods, and clean gently around it. At the second visit, the dentist checks the fit, colour and bite of the final crown before cementing it in place.
Living with it
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to where the crown meets the gum, and clean between teeth every day. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath can. Regular checkups and cleanings help the team spot early problems around the margins.
Some sensitivity or tenderness after placement can be normal for a short time. Contact the office if the bite feels high, pain persists, the crown feels loose or a piece chips. If you grind, a night guard may help protect both the crown and your other teeth.
Planning your appointment
Book your crown consultation at our Port Dover office. Ask how many appointments are involved and roughly how long each takes, so you can plan around the trip.
If you are considering whitening, discuss it first, since crowns are matched to your current shade and do not lighten afterward.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
When much of a tooth is missing, cracked or weakened, a filling may not provide enough support. A crown covers the tooth and helps protect it from breaking. The dentist will explain the reasons for your specific tooth.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness afterward can occur and usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort persists or worsens.
Many crowns last for years, depending on the material, your bite, grinding habits and home care. Decay at the edges is a common reason for replacement, so daily cleaning and regular checkups matter.
Call the office. Keep the temporary crown and avoid chewing on the tooth. The dentist may recement it, since the prepared tooth needs protection until the final crown is placed.
No. Crowns keep the shade they were made in. If you want whiter teeth, consider whitening before your crown is matched so it blends with your brighter natural teeth.
Inlays and onlays sit between a filling and a crown in size. La Salette patients can learn when they are suggested, how they are made and why they save tooth.
